Hello,
I have a 2018 MacBook Pro 2.2 ghz 6-core intel i7 processor with 16gb memory. For the past several weeks the fan keeps coming on. I understand that it will boot on if I am doing activities like gaming... but this is ALL the time. I could simply be using text edit and it will come on. I checked the activity monitor and nothing seems to be using a lot of CPU.
I don't remember what it's called, but I did do some reboots while holding down certain keys... and that didn't work.
I am a telehealth therapist and use FaceTime/zoom and used to have no problem, but now the client's will hear the fan in the background and it's distracting.
Does anyone have any idea of what this could be?

It could have to do with the machine being clogged with dust. After 4 years of daily use, it wouldn't be unlikely that dust is blocking the vents. you can check if air is moving through the vents when the fans are going crazy. It could also be that the thermal past has gone bad over the years. It should last a bit longer than 4 years, but it is a possibility. Of course it can also be the update. Monterey seems to be quite taxing and or badly optimised for non Apple silicon Macs. I have a 2015 15" and it is also struggling, with fans almost constantly on.

If it is running at maximum RPM (usually about 6000 on a Macbook Pro), this indicates there is software running on your Mac that is stressing the CPU or GPU. · Open Activity Monitor to see which apps are using the most CPU. You can also see which apps are using the most energy as well. Apps like Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, and VMware Fusion/Parallels tend to cause the fans to speed up, as the temperature of your CPU/GPU will increase when using those apps. · Disable Flash in your browser. Flash is now disabled by default in Firefox. In Chrome, you can use Flashcontrol to disable instances of Flash (it still allows you to view Flash on a per-site basis as needed). It’s one of the biggest causes of CPU/GPU stress, and will no doubt increase your Macbook Pro fan speed because Flash is so intensive on hardware. · Restart your Macbook Pro.
