Compared to a fire pit the Chiminea does not provide much heat at all and only one or two people can really sit in front of it at a time. The advantage is of course the smoke goes up the chimney and not into your face. I imagine the clay ones might get hotter all around and retain heat longer, but from what I have read the clay ones will not hold up in wet climates.
