My boyfriend and I purchased a “galvanized fire ring” from Lowe’s as a cheap, makeshift firepit until we can get a professional to build one into the patio when we redo all the hardscaping. We passed on the other more expensive options as they’re so cheaply made and bottom out after just a few burns. We had our first burn last night in this ring and it was lovely, felt safe, until I read online that you should never heat up galvanized steel as the zinc fumes are super toxic.
My question is…why would they sell these things as firepits if they’re unsafe to use?? Are they not actually galvanized?

If you heat the ring until its glowing (which is how hot you would need it to be to cause the fumes you're worried about), then yea, you got problems. But if your fire is thst hot, you won't be able to get close enough to breath the fumes anyway.

I know it will kill you if you weld it.... it will make you sick if you breath a large amount of the fumes (good ventilation will prevent this) but it is very unlikely to kill you. ...but how dangerous is it to use in a wood fueled fire pit? Do you spend a lot of time breathing fumes from your fire pit? In any case the zinc will burn off. You can also easily strip the zinc off with a weak acid such as phosphoric or acetic.
