My boyfriend and I purchased a “galvanized fire ring” from Lowe’s as a cheap, makeshift firepit until we can get a professional to build one into the patio when we redo all the hardscaping. We passed on the other more expensive options as they’re so cheaply made and bottom out after just a few burns. We had our first burn last night in this ring and it was lovely, felt safe, until I read online that you should never heat up galvanized steel as the zinc fumes are super toxic.
My question is…why would they sell these things as firepits if they’re unsafe to use?? Are they not actually galvanized?

More on reddit.comI have endless supplies of off cuts of galv sheet metal. I know it will kill you if you weld it.... but how dangerous is it to use in a wood fueled fire pit?
