For those with rectangular builtin firepits: what size you running? We were thinking 4'x3' pit +8" border. Can't decide if it is too big/small for the space.
I just built a 36" interior diameter round pit with 8" block, and ~11" cap. Stone veneer, fully custom and DIY. Burner is a Warming Trends 320k BTU Crossfire octagonal burner. I'll be lighting it soon, waiting a few days for a 3/4" gas line since it's so large.

Best way to make a fire pit lid for this long rectangular fire pit?
What are the benefits of a rectangular fire pit over round ones?
Rectangular fire pits offer several advantages that might suit your outdoor space better. Their elongated shape provides more surface area for heat and allows more people to sit comfortably around the fire. They often fit well against walls or in narrow patios, maximizing space efficiency. Rectangular designs also tend to have a modern aesthetic that complements contemporary outdoor furniture. Additionally, many rectangular fire pits come with features like tank hideaways and covers, enhancing convenience and safety.
What materials work best as a base inside a rectangular fire pit?
The base of a rectangular fire pit plays an important role in heat distribution and safety. Commonly used materials include lava rocks, fire glass, and fire-rated sand. Lava rocks are porous and help retain heat while allowing airflow. Fire glass adds an aesthetic appeal with reflective colors and is heat resistant. Fire-rated sand can also be used to cover the burner and protect it. Avoid using regular stones or materials that can crack or explode under high heat.
How do I choose the right size fire pit for my patio?
Choosing the right size fire pit depends on your patio space and how you plan to use it. For smaller patios, a compact rectangular fire pit around 40-42 inches can provide warmth without overwhelming the area. Larger patios can accommodate bigger fire pits, like those 50 inches or more, offering more heat and seating space. Consider the number of people you want to gather around and leave enough clearance for safety. Also, think about the fire pit's shape and design to complement your outdoor decor and provide comfortable seating arrangements.
