August 25, 2025 - I do not know why they offer a different download for “LastPass Mac App”. It downloads the same thing as “LastPass for Safari” as of May 15, 2022. Follow whatever prompts necessary to open, mount, and install the LastPass app. It first installs the LastPass for Mac App. Once you open that up, it will prompt you to then install the LastPass browser extension for Safari.

Hi, I'm really struggling with this, I've just got a new macbook and unable to download the lastpass extension, it just sends me to the desktop and downloads the desktop app. I'm completely lost, the documentation says to download the safari extension, but I simply can't seem to get to it. Any help would be much appreciated as LastPass support guy couldn't seem to help either

I don't have experience of this on Lastpass, but I know that 1Password users on Mac need to download the desktop app to install the Safari extension. Something changed at Apple which meant this was the only way to get it to work. Have you tried installing the desktop app?

I recently tried LastPass (again) to see if it had improved over the past few months...apparently not.
I’m a retired geek so it’s not like I don’t understand how to follow their instructions, but the LastPass Safari extension simply doesn’t work on Safari and macOS.
I didn’t use the legacy version on the Mac App Store, I downloaded the version they specify from LastPass.com. When installed, the Safari tool bar icon is a large exclamation point and clicking it opens a blank white, empty window. Tried the process three times.
I know the extension would likely work on Chrome, but I’m not willing to switch to Chrome just to use LastPass. Has anyone successfully installed the LastPass extension to Safari on macOS Catalina?

I use it with Firefox on Mac and also the Mac OS app. (Latest Catalina) Both work for me.

Have you tried the LastPass Mac App? Most of the deficiencies (and there was a lot) from the Extension have been addressed. It's a full stand alone app that integrates properly with Safari. That being said I still prefer LastPass on Chrome and Firefox. Spending 40+ hours a week at work on a Windows machine it's a easier transition to use a browser that is cross platform.

Since they dropped the full Mac OS app and moved to extension-only I’m forced to sign back in multiple times a week - “You are signing in from a new device that we do not recognize”, that device being the same MacBook Air I’ve been using since 2020.
