Unless the paint is really old it's probably not oil based, which means you're fine. If acetone removes it, it's water based and you are good to go with what you've got. Otherwise you will need to use an oil based primer like Killz 3. And TSP is never a bad idea. More on reddit.com

There is a ProMar ceiling paint, my guess is the store probably didn’t carry that product and the employee thought they were giving you the right thing. the 200 flat ultra white would work, but it’s not AS flat as the ceiling paint. just make sure if you use it to keep a record of that in case you need to touch up. if you want to go with a safer option, you could go get eminence, or you could do ProMar 400 flat, as that is a pure flat and with match up with our actual ceiling paints if you need to touch up in the future. I used to paint for a living and am somewhat of a paint snob. Can’t go wrong with any of the high end stuff. Benjamin Moore, Sherwin Williams etc. if you have the budget. However, I recently repainted a child’s bedroom in my house and chose Behr Ultra Satin. It’s their midline product and about as low quality as I’ll go. A lot of people shit on Behr, and I get it. But with proper wall prep and good sense I find it’s a decent paint without breaking the bank. In my case I was going from darker bluish green to a minecraft grass green. I primed the walls first, then did two coats of paint. It came out great. I like to buy the paint the same day I use it. Cuts down on the amount of stirring you have to do. But you still need to stir it occasionally. You’ll notice it getting thicker sometimes. Stop and stir. Don’t skimp on brushes and rollers. The price between crap and quality isn’t that much and will save you a lot of headaches. Plus a good brush will last years and years with proper care. If you don’t have them get a brush comb and a painter’s tool with the round cut out for roller cleaning. They are cheap but oh so valuable. Good luck. More on reddit.com
