Lat/Lon Formats and Symbols
This is the format you'll find most computer based mapping systems displaying. The coordinates are stored internally in a floating point data type, and no additional work is required to print them as a floating point number. Often the N-S and E-W designators are omitted. Positive values of latitude are north of the equator, negative values to the south. Watch the sign on the longitude, most programs use negative values for west longitude, but a few are opposite.

Latitude/Longitude Formats and Conversion – TNP Service & Support
Terrain Navigator Pro allows you to display and enter Latitude/Longitude coordinates in three formats: Degrees Minutes Seconds (D° M' S"), Decimal Minutes (D° M.M'), and Decimal Degrees (D.D°). Each of these formats can represent the same geographic location, but expressed differently.

Converting latitude and longitude
GPT said: Hello! Yes, you can convert this data into decimal degrees using Python. From your description, it appears that the GPS device is providing the location in the Degree Minutes (DDMM.MMMM) format. We need to convert this to Decimal Degrees (DD.DDDD). You can use the following Python code to do the conversion: def convert_to_decimal_degrees(coord): degrees = int(coord) // 100 minutes = coord - 100*degrees return degrees + minutes / 60 latitude = 4042.6142 longitude = 7400.4168 latitude_in_decimal_degrees = convert_to_decimal_degrees(latitude) longitude_in_decimal_degrees = convert_to_decimal_degrees(longitude) print(f"Latitude: {latitude_in_decimal_degrees}, Longitude: {longitude_in_decimal_degrees}") This function works by separating the degrees and minutes, then converting the minutes to a decimal and adding it back to the degrees. Please remember that if your longitude and latitude are in the Western and Southern Hemispheres, respectively, they should be negative. This isn't incorporated in the function above, but you can add that functionality depending on the direction indicators (N, S, E, W) you get from your GPS device. More on reddit.com

What is longitude?
Longitude is a measurement of location east or west of the prime meridian at Greenwich, London, England, the specially designated imaginary north-south line that passes through both geographic poles and Greenwich. Longitude is measured 180° both east and west of the prime meridian.

The purpose of this publication is to help you understand how the four most common coordinate systems work, how to recognize them and how to convert coordinates between the formats. The kind of mapping most GIS and GPS users do involves locating things on a round (or reasonably round) surface of the globe. Whether this is done electronically or with paper maps, a system of degrees measured along circles of latitude and longitude is often used.
