4 days ago - Before Soviet occupation in 1940, ethnic Latvians constituted about three-fourths of the country’s population. Today they make up about three-fifths of the population, and Russians account for about one-fourth. There are small groups of Belarusians, Ukrainians, Poles, Lithuanians, and others.

‘Without enough Latvians, we won’t be Latvia’: eastern Europe’s shrinking population | Latvia’s population is 30% smaller than it was in 1990 and by 2050 numbers will be in decline in over half of Europe’s 52 countries.
To be honest though, as a Latvian I can say that in 1990 a lot of people in Latvia were recent Russian speaking immigrants from other Soviet republics who left, either to go back to their countries or West in the later years so the decline has been not as much about ethnic Latvians or Latvians who have lived here for generations, but of first generation immigrants. But yes, it is and will be a challenge going forward. More on reddit.com

To anyone panicking about population decline.

Man GDP izaugs ļoti strauji.

Why is Riga's population shrinking while Vilnius is rising?
Rīgas population isn't really decreasing, Riga with the metro area is probably the only part of Latvia that has growing population, what's actually happening is the decreasing of density, kids growing up and moving out of their parents appts and people leaving cramped communal apartments Not to mention that the Latvian dream is having a detached house and your own sauna and garden which isn't achievable in the borders of Riga Aka essentially people leaving the technical border of Riga while still working and shopping there, so if you stop looking at it naively, the city of Riga probably has around 1.3 million population More on reddit.com
