6. I need to lay off employees. | U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission
Ensure that layoffs or reductions in force (RIFs) are based on nondiscriminatory reasons, such as quality or quantity of work, rather than on race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, sexual orientation, or transgender status), national origin, disability, age (40 or older) or genetic information. For example, a Muslim employee who takes breaks during his shift to pray may not be selected for layoff based on a belief that his prayer breaks reflect a lack of commitment to his job.
How does your company select who to lay off?
Cant speak for all companies but mine started with underperformers, then basic data entry roles that could be outsourced More on reddit.com
My Corporation just laid off a ton of employees, and scheduled a company-wide call the same afternoon…
Now that everyone has probably been through multiple layoffs (I have been laid off twice) we are all starting to understand you will lay us off regardless of how much or how hard or how well we work so two things I always do. 1- Do my job, do it well but don't do anything extra 2- Expect to be laid off anytime and have something churning in the background just in case BTW also got rehired by one of these. They reached out two years later, job was fun so did go back. Still there but know the score now. More on reddit.com
Shocked by company’s layoff process - is this common?
I’m so sorry. This is the lesson I learned from. Save everything you work on weekly to a .fig file and airdrop to a personal device. (Never worked on PC) More on reddit.com
Why have there been a "massive layoff" from big tech companies, and yet they are hiring?
They don't want those employees back because either they were hired at too high a price point, and the company is worried about resentful employees if they offered to rehire at a lower rate. More likely their position doesn't exist anymore and the talent criteria they want to hire for is different. Or they just didn't like those employees for whatever reason: culture, performance, attitude.... People were hiring like crazy in 2020 because they were trying to capture some new market created by COVID. Zoom has dramatically increased their market share for instance. But lots of companies had to take some business service remote and tried to do it via technology. Then the pandemic ended and growth expectations shifted. More on reddit.com

Staying nimble and continuing to strengthen our organizations
6 days ago - The reductions we’re sharing today are a continuation of this work to get even stronger by further reducing bureaucracy, removing layers, and shifting resources to ensure we’re investing in our biggest bets and what matters most to our customers’ current and future needs. While this will include reducing in some areas and hiring in others, it will mean an overall reduction in our corporate workforce of approximately 14,000 roles. We’re working hard to support everyone whose role is impacted, including offering most employees 90 days to look for a new role internally (the timing will vary some based on local laws), and our recruiting teams will prioritize internal candidates to help as many people as possible find new roles within Amazon.
