I totally get where you’re coming from - I’ve got two cats and went through way too many “wipeable” sofas that still managed to trap fur in every crevice. I would guess that it’s an American Leather mechanism that’s in their sofa, and Crate & Barrel designed the general look of it. Room & Board’s Berin is made by American Leather also. The mattress is basically memory foam so should hold up well over time. The reviews are quite favorable. They also have one called Ellingson made by American Leather and has the same style mattress. Don’t get the Metro sleeper sofa from them. As a sofa, it’s hard as a rock. The mattress is good though. More on reddit.com

your best option for an application in which you will actually use the bed more than 1 or 2 days a year: American Leather. its a widely held opinion within the furniture industry that these are the best BEDS in sleepers The design is patented and/or protected by aggressively litigious lawyers, and the result is zero competition and so a VERY high price tag. WARNING: American Leather sofas are stupefyingly heavy.... This is not an exaggeration. They weigh around 200-250 lbs. No joke. That makes them as much as 100 lbs heavier than some of the really light weight sleeper sofas. If you get an American Leather sofa, you will 100% need to have 2 legitimately strong guys move it. Its very hard to spend less than $3,000 on an American Leather. The 2nd choice is the conventional bi-fold metal frame sleeper, which is the same basic design that everyone on planet earth is already familiar with (its almost 100 years old). The cheapest solution to make a bifold work for ergonomics is to buy a 2ndary ~3" foam topper that you store in the closet for when its needed. its clumsy but it will always work. The other solution is the Air mattress (Legett and Platt makes them). The problem with the air mattresses is that the air bladder and/or pump will, inevitably leak or break.... even if its in 5-10 years its almost guaranteed to happen. There is another bi-fold sleeper option that is less commonly availabe. its called the Cozy Mattress Sleeper ( http://cozymattress.com/ ) and a few smaller US based furniture manufacturers offer them. They are spring mattresses and are ~8-9" thick (which is about 2x the thickness of a conventional bi-fold sleeper). They are thick enough so that you have zero chance of feeling the middle bar or anything like that. They are ultra heavy duty variants of the bi-fold that are designed and intended for use in "premium" commercial applications like high end hotels. ultra heavy duty means significantly thicker metal-tube frame construction, more springs, and the mechanism itself is spring loaded (which means opening and closing it is aided by a spring) for people 160lbs or less, I would say its "medium firm". I don't think anyone would describe them as "soft". For heavier people, in the 160-200lb range I think its still probably "medium firm" bordering on medium. Like the American Leather mentioned above, these sleepers are very very heavy. Even the small number of exceptions are still limited in length. American Leather DOES make kings.
