Hello Suz_Suzanne,

Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I understand your situation. On Lenovo laptops, 4 beeps usually indicate a BIOS ROM checksum error.

There could be several reasons for this:

  1. CMOS battery failure: The CMOS battery is used to maintain BIOS settings and the clock. If the battery fails, it may cause BIOS data to not be saved properly.
  2. BIOS corruption or need for a refresh: The BIOS file may be corrupted or need to be refreshed.
  3. Motherboard issue: In rare cases, this beep pattern may also indicate a motherboard problem.

If your laptop supports removing the CMOS battery, you can take it out to reset the BIOS settings. This may clear the checksum error.

Here is a general guide for the procedure. You can also search for disassembly videos for your specific model (if you are not familiar with hardware, I do not recommend doing this alone to avoid further risks. Please hand over the device to the official brand after-sales service):

  1. Shut down and disconnect the power: Turn off the laptop and disconnect the power adapter.
  2. Remove the back cover: Most laptop back covers can be removed by unscrewing a few screws. Be careful to avoid damaging the back panel.
  3. Locate the CMOS battery: The CMOS battery is usually a coin cell battery (CR2032) or a small battery connected to the motherboard with a plug.
  4. Remove the battery and wait: Carefully remove the battery and wait for about 5-10 minutes to ensure the BIOS settings are completely cleared.
  5. Reinsert the battery and reassemble the back cover: Put the CMOS battery back in place, reassemble the back cover, reconnect the power, and start the laptop.

If you are going to modify BIOS Settings, please  back up all your personal files first to ensure you do not lose data.

If resetting the CMOS battery does not work, you can try updating the BIOS. Lenovo should provide BIOS update tools.

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, or if you are unsure about the procedure, it is recommended to contact Lenovo's official after-sales service center for further diagnosis and repair.

Best wishes

February 8, 2017 - In case you still hear 4x 4 beeps, you can remove the CMOS battery and leave it for about 15 minutes before trying to boot again. Only remove the CMOS if you're 100% sure there are no supervisor passwords set!

Lenovo laptop beeps 4 times continuously Win 10
My Lenovo IdeaPad slip laptop keeps beeping 4 beeps in this pattern: 1223. I looked it up and found it means there is a BIOS ROM checksum error. I tapped F2 on startup to enter the bios, tabbed to the exit screen to reset and save. This did not fix the problem. More on learn.microsoft.com

r/thinkpad on Reddit: Lenovo ThinkPad x1 gen 7, 4 and 2 beeps...
December 28, 2023 -

hi,

several days ago I've bought Lenovo model like in the subject, generally in not bad shape, at least externally. Battery qualified to replace soon but still I was able to work on it around 2h. But today something happens. As always I was keeping lid closed in sleep mode, my son start to play with it, in the way that he was trying to log in into my windows account etc. I've said to him that he must wait, when I'll finish my work he'll be able to watch something, I didn't check what he was doing with this laptop more but at the end when I back to it to finally with intention to play some cartoons I open it and screen was black, not like turn off dark but turn on dark, so pixels were working but they're dark. So I just force turn off it with power button and power it again, having in mind that Windows behave sometimes strange. But still when I power it ON, keyboard lights up like in the normal booting process, screen again was going from dark turn OFF to dark turn ON but nothing was showing up. So I connect external display and yeah there was visible mouse I was like ok it's not so bad. Somehow I was able to log in to Windows and operate on it without problem. Internal laptop screen was showed like Display 2 isn't active, I was switching between external and internal without success. Internal just turn ON dark and again turn OFF dark. After I run lenovo short diagnostics but there was no screen test besides this other tests passed gpu also. After that I was thinking that maybe battery have something to do with it but no, when I disconnect battery and run it only on AC, was the same. After I found that lenovo hard reset can help, but not this time it gets worse, after hard rest it starts to restart kind of 2-3 times and I get 4 beeps and after 2 beeps.. And now I'm not able to start it in normal way to Windows and I'm getting always or 4 beeps and 2 beeps or only 2 beeps. It's out of warranty ofc and I'm just thinking if there is still hope for it or better to scrap it…any advice will be great..
