r/GamingLaptops on Reddit: Wanted some feedback about the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 before purchasing.
May 13, 2023 -

I’ve seen mixed reviews about this laptop. I understand it’s a budget one, and that’s what I’m looking for. I’m not looking to play triple AAA games on this really, more older and simpler games, maybe some single player games. Lots of reviews I’ve seen include the battery draining a lot while plugged in, not working/dying after a few weeks/months. It seems like people are getting defected ones. Anyone with this laptop or more knowledge care to give some feedback I’d really appreciate before I blow $600 lol.

Gaming laptops (exc. some niche and expensive models like the g14 and the Legion Slim) are generally heavy and thick so I won't consider as much of a con as the following. The two biggest offenders are the battery and the screen. The battery is really bad, like really bad, I make some compromises and adjustments and still never surpass the 5 hour mark. I rate Lenovo high but still don't know what were they smoking when they decided to pack a 45Whr battery in a gaming laptop. Or actually I do... To save costs. You see Lenovo is a top global manufacturer. It floods the market with A LOT of laptops, with different brand names but if you look closely to the version number they are basically all the same with subtle differences. For example, 15ACH6 is the same version number of Legion 5 and IdeaPad Gaming 3. 14ACN6 is the same number as IdeaPad 5, IdeaPad 5 Pro, IdeaPad 5 Slim, IdeaPad 5 Flex... And yes they share almost all components, different branding, depending it it's EU, North America, Asia or Africa market. They do this to save up costs of R&D and recycle more the last generation parts like Apple does (but take in consideration Apple computers are even higher priced!). The other point is why put the same or better battery on the budget version rather than on the Pro? Think of this like Apple does with iPhones... If they spec up the base model no one is going to buy the Pro or Pro Max. The final point, they thought they can grab even more cash by selling a higher capacity battery in their website and the replacement service (yes because if you replace it yourself the warranty voids). Now, the screen is very dim, you'll have to ramp up the brightness to max but even you won't see shit in daylight (ha! are you thinking the same? the higher the brightness the more battery juice it sucks). Regarding colour accuracy it's very shitty (45% NTSC), again it's pronounced more with the dim screen. Especially nowadays that we have good quality smartphones, TVs and tablets. It's noticeable for content consumption, not a huge deal breaker (and you can make some adjustments) but absolutely NOT recommended for serious photo/video editing or any simulation that requires good colour and contrast. So the screen is terrible but you'll get the same in the same budget gaming laptops league. The battery is the worse thing if you like the portability side of things. Other users will say: jUsT plUg iT bcZ it'Z a GaMinG LapToP. Which is low-effort rationale, we bought a gaming laptop because it's portable, and we also use for other tasks. At that point we would rather buy a Steam Deck or console. Regarding performance performance this thing is a BEAST. It's my first gaming laptop and my model is the RTX 3050 and doesn't break a sweat. Being able to pull 100+ FPS on High settings without worrying too much is the close you can get to a console experience. TL;DR: If you're okay with the worst brand new battery and screen you've ever bought and it's all the money you have GO FOR IT. If you can throw more money buy the LEGION.

I’d have to say, Yes! It is a simple machine but it can still do a lot of the tasks students need computers for, paired with WPS Office, it handles essays, research, and Zoom effortlessly.

I tested the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 15IRU9 and found a no-frills laptop at a decent price
Available in either Abyss Blue or gray, the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 offers up that distinctive Ultrabook aesthetic. It’s thin, light, and, from afar, looks like a MacBook competitor. Of course, upon closer look, its mid-range bones are more apparent, like the fact that its chassis is made out of plastic. However, it’s a nice option for people who just need a computer and don’t care about getting something expensive or top-of-the-line. It comes with a decently-sized 15.6... May 25, 2025 - Aesthetically, the IdeaPad won’t win any awards, but it comes in a handsome Cosmic Blue color that’s very similar to the more expensive Yoga 9i. It doesn’t look or feel cheap. I was a bit nervous about the bundled software, given the price point. There aren’t that many apps and utilities, thankfully, but they do maximum damage. In addition to Dolby Access and Intel Graphics Command Center, there are six Lenovo apps, not counting the user guide link: Lenovo HotKeys (keyboard configuration), Lenovo Now (product registration and Lenovo and third-party upsells), Lenovo Subscription Marketplace (a link to the Lenovo Software & Subscriptions website), Lenovo Vantage (drivers product service, and Lenovo upsells), and Smart Connect (for integration with Lenovo and Motorola phones, tablets, and PCs).

Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 review: A rare miss from Lenovo
The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 has a chassis that feels good to hold, but the display and the internals disappoint. At $769, it just feels too expensive for this experience. The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 is a 15-inch budget touchscreen laptop, and we tested a $769 configuration available through Costco. I'm generally a fan of Lenovo laptops, but this one isn't up to the standard I expect from them. While this laptop does have a nice design and solid build quality, it feels like so many corners have been cut — and the price has crept up enough — that the resulting product isn't a great deal.
