r/Lenovo on Reddit: Lenovo Ideapad Gaming 3 Won't Read USB From Boot Menu
October 29, 2025 -

I have a Lenovo Ideapad Gaming 3 that crashed about 2 years ago. After being a paper weight for the last two years, I finally got around to get it running. It boots into the Boot menu no problem. Boot menu detects my SSD with no issue.

The only option in the Boot Menu is EFI PXE Network. It does no recognize the USB. USB is enabled in BIOS. Secure Boot is Disabled. I made a Windows 11 Boot Disc on the USB.

Still doesn't seem to recognize the USB. However, My HP Elitebook recognizes it with no issue.

Any ideas?

u/MrHockeyJournalist Hi there. Thanks for reaching out. Several issues can prevent a the unit from recognizing a bootable USB drive, even when it works on another computer. The problem is often related to the BIOS/UEFI boot mode settings and how the bootable media was created. Recreate the bootable USB drive The most common cause is that the USB installer was created using the wrong partition scheme for your laptop's boot mode. Your Ideapad likely uses UEFI, which requires a GUID Partition Table (GPT). Download Rufus. A third-party tool like Rufus is often more reliable than the standard Microsoft Media Creation Tool for this purpose. Set partition scheme to GPT. When using Rufus, be sure to select "GPT" under the "Partition scheme" setting. Select UEFI. Choose "UEFI (non CSM)" for the "Target system" setting. Create the drive. Select your Windows 11 ISO file and click "Start." Change your BIOS settings Even with the correct USB format, certain BIOS settings can prevent the drive from being detected. Access the BIOS/UEFI. Turn off your laptop, then press the Novo button (a small pinhole on the side) to access the Novo Menu and select BIOS Setup. Load default settings. In the Exit tab of the BIOS, select "Load Default Settings" or "Load Optimized Defaults" and save the changes. This resets all settings to a known, good configuration. Enable Legacy/CSM mode. If loading defaults doesn't work, try enabling Legacy Support, which may be needed for some bootable media. In the BIOS, go to the Boot tab and change "Boot Mode" from UEFI to Legacy Support or Legacy First. For some models, this setting is located in the Exit tab under "OS Optimized Defaults". Save and exit. Press F10 to save your changes and exit the BIOS. Erica_Lenovo

r/Lenovo on Reddit: Can't Install Windows 10 on NO OS Lenovo Ideapad 3 15IHU6
November 13, 2021 -

I recently purchased this Lenovo Ideapad 3 15IHU6 and I can't install Windows 10 because the laptop won't boot from my USB flash drive. The USB flash drive is formated using NTFS and I used the Media Creation Tool to put Windows 10 on it. I tried disabling Secure Boot from BIOS and enabling boot only from usb flash drive. Any advice on how to install Windows 10 on my laptop? I'm stuck.

r/Lenovo on Reddit: Lenovo IdeaPad 3 won't boot from USB (Help)
January 14, 2023 -

So, I just bought a new IdeaPad 3 15 I TL6 Lenovo. When I start it, it gives me "Default Device Missing or Boot Failed" , even with my definitely bootable USB.

When I go to BIOS , under the boot tab, there is no single option to change either boot sequence or boot mode (Already know about Legacy and other stuff). I turned off safe boot option as well, USB boot is definitely enabled.

I tried every option of booting USB there is, and still nothing.

Has anyone ever had this problem and what's the solution. Thanks in advance.

r/techsupport on Reddit: Lenovo Gaming Ideapad 3 15ACH6 Will not boot or boot off USB
December 20, 2022 -

Hey guys,

I've built a few PC's in the past and have never had any issues like this. I was having issues with Windows 11 out of the box with this laptop so I installed Windows 10. I think it restarted during which caused issues but for a short period of time it was booting just fine into Windows 10 and updating. When I plugged it into the charger though it was randomly restarting and having additional boot issues. At first I thought it was the charger, bought a new charger, and I haven't had issues with it randomly restarting so I narrowed it down the the SSD or the Windows 10 I installed being corrupt. I bought a new SSD, installed it, it recognizes in the BIOS but not as a boot device. Make sense, I don't have Windows installed on it.

So I got a new USB drive and installed Windows 10 on it and now the Laptop won't boot off the USB. It just continues restarting to the Lenovo screen or "Preparing Automatic Repair" that goes nowhere. I feel like anything I do there's more issues with this things it's driving me crazy. I really want it working properly before I travel for the holidays.

My last thought is to use a USB Transfer Adapter with the new SSD, install Windows 10 from my desktop, reinstall the SSD into the laptop, and hope the laptop recognizes it as bootable. Thoughts?

Could it be bios? Faulty Mobo? Can I completely wipe it somehow without booting into OS and fresh install Windows (hoping it will boot off the USB)? Please if anyone can help this has been a nightmare. I took it to Microcenter and their Lenovo testing found nothing wrong with the hardware and had it until the warranty ran out.

Edit: Some additional info, I tested the new USB with Windows 10 on my desktop and it boots off it as normal, just not on the laptop. I also tried it with Rufus still nothing.

Edit 2: I'm trying to Factory reset it with the tiny button on the side, "System Recovery". Just showing a Lenovo logo and "Please Wait" for the last 15 minutes. I'm going to let it do it's thing for a bit but I am not hopeful.

Edit 3: Some additional information it doesn't list either of my SSD's as bootable it just lists Windows Boot Manager or whatever. Also, I do not care about any data on the laptop I just want it to boot.
