Keep in mind that the 1060 in the Y520 is the Max-Q version (10% slower than regular 1060 but around the same TDP as the 1050ti) so heat likely wouldn't be an issue, but I would wait for a review on it.

i5-7200U. The fact that the 7500U is called an "i7" is regarded commonly to be misleading branding on Intel's part. Very little improvement. Also I would be sure to avoid the stock 1366x768 TN displays on these laptops. The low resolution doesn't let you fit much onscreen, and the poor contrast and viewing angles make it look like the left side of this photo . Rule of thumb with Thinkpads: Unless the stock screen is already 1920x1080 IPS, pick that upgrade first before considering what other upgrades fit into the budget. Most everything else is usually already pretty good (CPU) or is user-upgradable (RAM), but the default displays are pretty bad. RAM: Much cheaper to DIY upgrade to 8GB (get a second 4GB DDR4 2133 SODIMM to add to the empty slot) or 12GB (get an 8GB DDR4 2133 SODIMM to add). SSD: Also much cheaper. I'd grab a 256GB M.2 SSD, put it in the M.2 slot, and look up tutorials online for how to transfer the OS to it, or perhaps just do a clean install and hunt down the drivers. (EDIT: Seems the L470 may not have an M.2 slot. Unless you verify if has M.2, get a 2.5" SATA SSD for that one to replace the HDD with; M.2 for the T470 to add alongside the HDD) Finally, you can get the T470 in your price bracket if you use the Lenovo Perks link . I would get that. The L series don't have the same build quality as the T series. Same things apply: Don't pay to upgrade the CPU; get at least the 1920x1080 IPS display. More on reddit.com

Yeah, the 8th gen Intel CPUs runs rather hot.

I bought an Acer Nitro 5 with an i5-8300H and GTX 1050 Ti as an early Xmas gift for a relative who's laptop recently died. I deleted most of the bloatware (left some Acer utilities) and applied the most recent Windows updates. Did a bit of testing and noticed the i5-8300H hitting 97c while encoding some videos.

That is way too hot. I used ThrotteStop to lower the CPU Cache voltage by -125mv and lowered the CPU voltage by -250mv. That decreased the temps to 89c after doing a barrage of tests. Better, but still not great. Apparently, I had already the last of my thermal paste sometime ago so I had to order more. I disabled Turbo Boost for now which lowered the temps to around 76c and gave it to my cousin. I told not to fool around with ThrottleStop and simply use the laptop "as is" until I can replace the thermal paste sometime before Xmas.

Even when gimped, the Nitro 5 performs much better than his 5 year old laptop.
