The most important characteristics of a laptop are battery life ( power efficiency) and screen quality. That is what sells ( non apple ) clamshells. All the other crap they test in various reviews are mostly meaningless to the actual user. There is a very small %age of the market for high power/perf laptops and even smaller market for gaming. Most of the reason a laptop is “slow” is bloatware and has nothing to do with the cpu choice anyway. And Intel is already “beating” AMD in laptop cpu sales, by a substantial margin. People incorrectly assume AMD has most of the market share in all segments because of the very noisy and super-biased gaming reviewers, who mostly focus on $3000+ gaming desktop builds. The laptop itself is still a decent one, but not worth 1200 usd. I have bought a couple of T14 gen 2 on ebay - the average of the 10+ laptops was 251 usd / piece. Yes, including shipping. These were not the Ryzen 7 but Ryzen 5 5650or sometimes Intel 1145G7 versions with 16 gb soldered RAM and 512 GB SSD. Batteries were in good condition between 94 to 99% battery health. You can easily upgrade the RAM additional 16 GB for 20 usd plus additional 50 usd the 1 TB SSD. TLDR: go check on ebay and steal a good one for 250 bucks and then upgrade yourself the RAM and SSD and you will find yourself around 330-350 bucks top More on reddit.com

Don't pay more for the older model. The new one has RAM on SODIMMs (not soldered). The T14 gen 5 is a great choice for most use cases, but beware that the battery life isn't great (and definitely get the larger battery of the two options). The AMD model has an OLED option that looks great but eats battery even more (so consider your intended uses before ordering that one).

November 13, 2025 - I have a T14s Gen 5 Core Ultra 5 135U and recently I saw ~9h of battery life, browsing websites. It's quite nice piece of hardware so with Lunar Lake it would be just perfect. Of course not for heavy workload because for this we will have Panther Lake.

June 30, 2024 - But seriously, ThinkPads were built like tanks and still are compared to many other brands. ... Expect a an overall good laptop, be wise with specs though, as not all T14 are upgradeable, get the gen 5 if possible. Other than that also expect great Linux support, average screen (unless OLED or 100% sRGB), average speakers, average Webcam, great keyboard and good build quality. Also, Lenovo is usually good with warranty claims too.
