My negative review of X1 Carbon gen 13
I’m kinda glad there are posts like this. Shame for OP being stuck with a machine they don’t like. Every time there’s a post on here about people being on the fence about TP vs MB, I tend to tell them to go for the MB and then get downvoted, which makes sense I guess being in the TP subreddit, but the reality of it is that quality ctrl across the board (any manufacturer) is way below what it should be, and I just can’t allow myself to be quiet about it. X1 Carbon Gen 7 and Yoga Gen 4 now on Lenovo's Website (for Canada, at least)

We're still missing all the options (like 4k for the X1 Carbon). I asked on the Live Chat, and the rep said that all the model versions will come out more or less randomly over the next month.

Interestingly, if you search the for the 4k model number found on the PSREF, 20QD000KCA, it's already listed on some computer sellers for around $3k (however that's the French keyboard option, the English keyboard option model number, 20QD000KCC, returns no hits with Google right now).

r/thinkpad on Reddit: My negative review of X1 Carbon gen 13
December 12, 2024 -

I received an X1 Carbon gen 13 after 5 weeks preordering and used it for 5 days. I come from a MacBook Pro M1pro 14", and my last Thinkpad was a X1 gen 8 for work.

I am overall very disappointed by the machine.

The good:

  • light and strong chassis

  • good battery life, I was getting ~7hours on typical excel+browser screen at 80% brightness

  • responsive enough for my use case

  • very reactive next day on site warranty (tested in Tokyo)

The Bad:

  • Noises! Cracking sounds and coil whine just enough to be a pain in a quiet room

  • Fan Noise. The fans have a high frequency noise, that gets higher and louder when the fan speed increases, Tested with tpfan manual option to be sure it was independent of the load. I had the fans replaced under the next day warranty and they have the same issue.

  • trackpad: with physical buttons, it is small and unresponsive especially compared to my Mac

The screen and keyboard are Ok but nothing to write about.

Coming from a MacBook Pro I feel that Lenovo is cutting corners on their top of the line expensive machine. Better capacitors, fans and trackpad could make this machine so much more enjoyable. Variable refresh rate display wouldn't hurt either.

At this price point it is not acceptable to me. I so much wanted to like it and replace my Mac with it.

I also forgot, but in Japan at least their return policy is quasi-inexistant. If you opened the box then you are stuck with the machine. Coil whine and noise fans are not recognized as an issue to return or replace the machine, hence why I had the fans replaced under warranty. Some other brand have a 14days no question asked return policy.

My fault for not reading the fine print I suppose

Normally, there's two or more compatible fan units available so when one of them has a problem (noise, performance), swapping it to other manufacturer's could resolve things. For X1C13, there is only one singular part 5H41J76277 so replacing won't do anything if it's intrinsic problem with the fan unit. Lenovo could update firmware to modify fan curve but sounds like the pitch is the problem which is a hardware thing. Trackpad in Windows laptops(I haven't used mac) always were suboptimal imho. Yes, windows precision and glass surface and what not, it still fails to accurately register <1mm movements which is painful to use for precise movements. I wonder if sensel's haptic touchpad is better in this regard. Coil whine seems to be common issue on X1C13. Seen a few people complaning on this very subreddit. I'm no EE but VRM setup is interesting on X1C13. Tiny inductors are used in set of 4(I'm guessing they are inductors, correct me if I'm wrong) in parrallel. No idea if four smaller is better than one big boi(or could be space restriction) but AFAIK more inductors, more possibility of coil whine. Also don't see big tantalum capacitors but they could just be under the mylar film or on the back.
