Best thinkpad workstation for my needs
If weight and size doesn't matter, P16 is as powerful as it gets for Thinkpads. It also has two SSD slots, so you could separate both Linux and Windows. Though better buy with small SSD and add bigger ones yourself - far cheaper and it's very easy to do. More on reddit.com

I use HP at work. Zbook and Z6 G4. I don't believe there is a pay wall for drivers but on eBay Z workstation are overpriced IMO. I myself use a Dell 7810 I bought back in 2022 and I love it. Well designed and quiet. I gave my son a P920 last Xmas and I think that one has the best money/value ratio right now. You can get a barebone for under $400 with heatsinks and M2 Flexbay included. Same price you may get a 7920 but the Flexbay may cost you over $100. The 3.5" expansion solution is under $50 from Lenovo website while 7920 drive expansion cost around $200. More on reddit.com

P8 sure looks great, but I'd get asked funny questions by the people in charge of budgets if I suggested acquiring some because it's such a cool design.. Also, there aren't many workstations around anymore. Most people who have used those in the past were migrated to laptops in 2021/22 when home office work was all the rage, with only a few higher-end machines remaining. Have taken to mostly put those in the server room with users rdping into them from their laptop for noise reasons. These things get LOUD when under load. There's a reason Lenovo offer rackmounts for them. Threadripper is awesome. Got Thinkstation P620 with the 5955 (16 cores), and that thing flies doing statistical modeling. Semi-affordable, too (around 3k with 4000 Ada GPU AFAIR) I buy SFF desktops that need to be cheap, quiet, space-saving and not much else as they don't need to perform demanding tasks at all. ThinkCentre M75 with AMD inside fulfil that role perfectly. And I can get them with VGA and serial ports (in 2025!) to connect to legacy hardware. More on reddit.com

I’ve had several that I’ve bought myself. My current Thinkstation is a P620. I’ve had it for nearly 3 years it has been awesome. In some ways Thinkstations have gotten better over the years in other ways they aren’t much better than a DIY but I don’t have time to build my own machine. If you get them on a deal they can be cheaper than DIY if not frankly DIY is the way to go unless you don’t have the time or skill to build your own. More on reddit.com

Hello,
I am a master student in computational science and engineering and currently I have an entry level HP with 8 Gb of ram, 1GHz processor, integrated graphics, a 100Gb SSD and 1Tb HDD.
I am not really happy with this setup because it is not powerful enough for computationally intensive tasks I have to do in my master program. And also I would like to dualboot windows 11 and ubuntu to do most of my programming tasks on linux but currently given the very little SSD I have dualbooting is not an option.
Since upgrading the SSD of my HP is not an option because I will still have a bad CPU, I would like to buy a new machine.
What I would like to have is a polyvalent and powerful workstation allowing me to run computationnaly demanding tasks. I would like it to also run smoothly any engineering programs.
I would like my machine to have good performances allowing me to use it without any problem for the next 10 years.
The specs I would like to have are:
-the best CPU with the best frequency, cores, threads I can get
-a 2Tb SSD allowing me to dualboot 1 Tb windows 1 Tb linux
-minimum 16 Gb of Ram and being able to upgrade the Ram
-I would like preferably to have a dedicated GPU. Not the best one but have one if I want to experiment programming with GPUs.
-weight and size of the computer doesn't matter for me
all of this with a maximum budget of 2500 € (Europe) /CHF (switzerland). But I would prefer the budget to be around 2000. It really depends if really putting 2500 gives me really a way better machine for the long run.
Do you think a thinkpad would be the right choice for my needs?
And what would be the best thinkpad for me?

Are you open to non-Thinkpad alternatives? I’m looking to expand my homelab with a new workstation for Proxmox or TrueNAS Scale. I’m not going with an actual server due to noise so I’m exploring the different workstation options with Xeons and Ram/storage capabilities that meet my needs. I’m primarily looking at Dell Precision 5810/5820/7810/7820, HP Z440/Z640 or Z4/Z6 G 4s, and Lenovo Thinkstations P520/P720/P920.
I’m looking for feedback on the pros/cons of going with which options, for example do the HP have their software/firmware locked behind a support account like the servers are?
I’m also considering case size, as I’d like to mount it in my rack. I think I’m leaning towards Xeon E5 v4 single CPU setup, but the Xeon Silver/Gold CPUs have dropped in price too.

I’d go with Dell 7820. Compact. Can be rack mounted. Can be found cheap - seen as low as $200 for barebones. You can start single CPU, and later add a second one. The 1st gen Xeon scalable are cheap and perform well. Recently got these: Xeon Gold 6146 12-core 3.2GHz -$120; Xeon Gold 6154 18-core 3.0GHz -$155; Xeon platinum 8158 12-core 3.0GHz - $110 (the same CPU as 6146) ; Xeon Gold 6150 18-core 2.7GHz - $80. In most cases Dell workstations come with embedded digital license for Windows 10/11 Pro for Workstations. Can be used with U.2 PCIe SSDs. 7820 is unpretentious - will work with literally anything thrown in it or missing, contrary to HP which can be bitchy - “you need to have this fan installed for this PSU” or this CPU can’t run with this heatsink “ etc. the Dell will just keep crawling even all limbs are missing. Also PSU organization in Dell much better, easily can be swapped, cabling and PSU are decoupled, you can add additional PCIe cables later, can use extra CPU power cable for GPU (like A6000). The HP’s PSUs are not modular and no option to add additional power cables later.

I enjoy beautiful computers and recently discovered Thinkstation P8, with its case designed by Aston Martin. Reminds me of the eye-catching Apple towers.
Stuff I do can be done just as well, if maybe a little slower, with a normal Ryzen 9 or a i7 so P8 with a Threadripper doesn't make sense for me, but I still like that it exists. Anyone here have any experience with P8 or any other Lenovo desktops?

No experience as a Desktop but I use one that I stuffed with two 4TB harddrives as a NAS with OpenMediaVault installed, works flawlessly :)

Never seen anyone talk about them before, but I'm assuming they're the same quality and such.
I'm in the market for an ML machine, and I see refurbed ThinkStations with RTX 2080s out there for reasonably cheap, and thought that might be an option. Don't want to fry my gaming PC running these models all the time, plus it'd be nice to game once in a while lol

I have a p360, i ordered one with a i7 12900k, 128 GB of ram, RTX A4500, 750 watts platinum power supply, and a raid 1 storage option for 4 tb drives, I upgraded it to dual 4tb nvme boot drives, a 22 tb mechanical raid setup, and an RTX A5500, Notable things, even though the motherboard supports 13 gen and 14th gen, Lenovo locks the upgrades on the cpu by bios, to force you to buy the newest generation, The back IO is unique, and so is the motherboard design, The bios is a classic workstation Lenovo bios with all the options, The stability is amazing, I needed more power so I changed my main system to a custom built PC, I got an Asus proart, with a 13 gen 13900k, and dual RTX A6000, Stability for the USB controller is worse for me now, and I miss the amazing bios options on the thinkstation, If you know what you're buying, they are amazing, when the new PX is available I will be buying one
