Why is gen 7 better than gen 8? And what is best buy gen atm (not considering newer gens)?
Hello Guys, I want to buy a refurbished Thinkpad for University. I am studing computer science.
Which is the better option.
X1C 6th gen with 16GB Ram, 512GB SSD , Intel Core i7 8650U 1,9 GHz (450€)
OR
X1C 8th gen with 16GB Ram, 512GB SSD , Interl Core i7 10610U 1,8 GHz (650€).
Yes they are not super cheap, but it is very difficult to find good ones with the right keyboard layout in my Country. Added to that, did someone tried to run games on these Laptops? I have a Gaming PC but i am curious what you can do with them.
Thank you a lot

Hi so as the title says, my brother is gifting me a TX1C8 for Christmas is it good for watching movies, browsing the internet and basic stuff with Windows 11?
hello, i'm looking to buy a 13 or 14 inch thinkpad for use at uni (exclusively for schoolwork-- psych & stats major, for context, so MS office and basic web browsing, perhaps some database software a few years down the line), and on the lower side of the price range. i am looking at a few options:
refurb X1 carbon gen 8 (intel i5) (from 2020)
new L13 gen 4 (intel i7)
new E14 gen 6 (ryzen 5 7535U)
unfortunately i know jack about processors so i'm not sure how they compare. i have read that the x1 gen 8 was seen as overpriced at the time for the processor quality, but now with the <$300 price tag, is that much of a concern? would it be too slow still?
i am most worried about battery degradation on the refurbished one, but the price point is what is attracting me (sub $300).
can anyone give advice on whether getting that one would be a bad or a good idea?
Hello!
I cannot figure out how to contact Lenovo support (every option seems to circle back to the Contact page), so I'm asking here!
I have an X1 Carbon (gen 8; 20U9), original owner, and the device is out of warranty. I've not been able to find answers to these questions in the manual (links to PDF) or elsewhere online. Apologies if I've gotten terminology wrong. I've used HWiNFO to help me identify current specs.
I do occasionally work with very large files, and I need more storage space, so I'm going to upgrade the SSD, and am trying to figure out which PCIe generation, NVMe version, and size (in TB) of SSD the computer will support. Upgrading to a new system is out of my financial reach right now and for the foreseeable future. Currently the stock 1TB SSD is still installed (model: SAMSUNG MZVLB1T0HBLR-000L7, NVMe [PCIe x4 8.0 GT/s @ x4 8.0 GT/s]).
The current SSD is PCIe 3.0. Can the computer support PCIe 4.0? perhaps with a firmware update? Or will any newly installed PCIe 4.0 SSD run at 3.0 speeds as long as the rest of the installed hardware is left as is?
My current SSD is NVMe version 1.3. What is the highest NVMe generation that the M.2 PCIe slot supports in the gen8 X1 Carbon system? Am I able to use, and also benefit from the increased speeds of, SSDs with NVMe 1.4 or 2.0?
It seems that I can install a 2TB drive, but could a 4TB drive work? I've seen a few refurbished gen8 X1 Carbon systems for sale that advertise a 4 TB SSD, such as this example from Walmart, so it appears possible.
Thank you in advance for your time!
On a low budget, do you think that it's worth it ? And how does it hold up in this time ?
Assume it has 16G ram and an Intel I5
I already have a chonky 16-inch MacBook for creative work but recently I've been taking a lot of online meetings and writing with my co-workers but Microsoft 365 on Mac have some annoying issues when I work with other members in the team using Windows.
I'm looking to buy myself a secondary laptop mostly for those simple task and some web browing on the go. I'm also willing to future proof it for a few years also
Specs:Gen 8: i7 10610U, FHD, 16GB RAM, 512GB
Gen 9: i7 1165G7, FHD, 16GB RAM, 512GB
Hi all
I finally bought X1 Carbon Gen 8 touchscreen today for $363. It came with i5-10210U mated with 16GB RAM and 1TB storage. I have a couple of questions below. TIA for your answers.

I see that the most made mod is the Innolux low power screen. Does it have a variant that supports touchscreen ?

I'm looking for a stylus that can support my machine. I need it for basic drawing stuff. Looking for some suggestions.
Hello dear people,
I am faced with the choice of either buying this laptop used:
Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 10 - 21CB Intel Core i5-1245U (2x 1.6 GHz + 8x 1.2 GHz) 35.6cm 14" TFT Display IPS 1920 x 1200 pixels (WUXGA) 16 GB LPDDR5 (onBoard / no slot) 512GB SSD Or
Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8 / 20UA Intel Core i5-10310U (4x 1.70 GHz) 35.6cm 14" TFT Display IPS with 10-Finger Multitouch 1920 x 1080 pixels (FHD) 16 GB LPDDR3 (onBoard / no slot) 512GB SSD M.2 PCIe/NVMe (OPAL 2.0)
The Gen 10 costs 300 euros more. I need the PC for programming under Windows and for watching Netflix. Which of the two PCs would you rather buy? Money is actually secondary but still has a small influence. I don't really have any use for the touchscreen either. I've read that if you don't need the performance, you should always go for the Gen 8 due to battery life, heat generation, and noise.
Thanks for your help. Best regards
I’m currently using a T480 and I’m thinking about purchasing an X1 Carbon gen 8 i5 - this will be mainly for commuting and programming with web browsing etc, no games.
I’ve read mixed reviews and wanted to know if anyone has any experience with this machine and if it’s worth buying to last the next 3+ years?
As a follow-up from the post I made yesterday, I'm leaning towards getting a newer Thinkpad X1 Carbon, but I'm unsure which generation is the best bang for my buck? How much of a difference are these generations (8,9,10) in terms of computing power/battery life and is the extra cost warranted if I opt for a newer one? I'm not a power-user, I use Jupyter Notebooks a lot, but for context, my modded-T430 and 2015 Macbook Air handle most (if not all) of my tasks. Main reason I'm going for the X1 Carbon line is because I want a better screen/speaker experience than I got from my old T480. I'll probably be shopping on eBay.
This is my first Thinkpad since 2020. Back then I had a Yoga 11e. Last couple years I was using a 2017 MacBook Air and wanted something lighter. I’m done with MacBooks and my first thought was a Thinkpad.
It’s really light and I can easily take it with me and pick up on my work. I like the fingerprint sensor but sometimes I have to try multiple times. But overall I just wanted the classic Thinkpad feel/toughness in a lightweight design. I don’t wanna babysit a laptop, I can just be rough with it and that’s great. I’m just using it for school work and browsing.
Hi I'm about to buy a gen 8 carbon X1 . Intel i7 10th . The store tells me I can upgrade it's ram to 32 gb but the other who sells that ram tells me that it's soldered to the board and only the SSD is upgradable? Is this true?
Hi,
I am a medical student at a danish university, and since my current computer (Lenovo Thinkpad X1 tablet gen 1) is beginning to struggle I've begun to look for a better replacement. I am not a gamer, but will mainly use the computer for work and study, home aswell as while traveling. My eyes have fallen for three (actually four) used af refurbished models;
thinkpad x1 carbon gen 8 (i5-102100, 512gb SSD, 16gb Ram) for 370 USD
thinkpad x1 carbon gen 8 (17-10510U, 512gb SSD, 16gb Ram) for 540 USD
thinkpad x1 carbon gen 9 (15-1135G7, 256gb SSD, 16gb Ram) for 751 USD
Microsoft Surface Laptop gen 4 AMD (Ryzen 5 4680U 2.2GHz, 256gb SSD, 16gb Ram) for 518 USD
Which one (especially between gen 8 and 9) would you pick? And is gen 9 upgrade worth the money?
The lenovo website says that this laptop is supposed to last up to 19.5 hours of battery life. but even with the max battery saver setting, the screen set to dim and using it for light processing. I haven't been able to get more than 4 hours and 30 minutes even when it was brand new. is there something I'm missing? any one else here have experience with the carbon x battery life?
Hi everyone,
I'm currently using a ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8 with the following specs:
-
Intel i5-10210U
-
8GB RAM
-
256GB PCIe SSD
I'm considering upgrading to the Lenovo ThinkPad X13s with the following specs:
-
Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3, 3GHz
-
16GB RAM
-
512GB SSD
Has anyone made a similar switch? If so, could you share your experiences? Specifically, I'm interested in:
-
Performance differences between the X1 Carbon Gen 8 and X13s.
-
Compatibility with Windows applications and any issues with the Snapdragon processor.
-
Any noticeable improvements or drawbacks in day-to-day use.
I primarily use my laptop for work, which includes a lot of multitasking, heavy use of Microsoft Excel, and browsing. Any insights or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance for your help!
