The ThinkPad X1 Carbon (Gen 8) comes with a couple of useful utilities and, at least on the units we tested, almost no crapware. The only real trialware we noticed on the two systems we tested was Microsoft Office 365, something a lot of people and companies already have a license for. The main utility for all ThinkPads, Lenovo Vantage, helps you keep drivers and firmware up-to-date ... The ThinkPad X1 Carbon combines a comfy keyboard with a super-svelte chassis.

Meet Lenovo's 8th Gen ThinkPad X1 Carbon: Almost the Same as the 7th Gen | Tom's Hardware
January 3, 2020 - That's what Lenovo must be thinking as today it announced the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8 and X1 Yoga Gen 5, both of which have nearly-identical specs and the same chassis as their immediate predecessors. Due out later this year for starting prices of $1,499 and $1,599 respectively, the new Carbons offer a couple of new configuration options, improved Wi-Fi and a slight keyboard labeling change. We normally expect that, when a company releases ...

Why is gen 7 better than gen 8? And what is best buy gen atm (not considering newer gens)?

I think it's when AMD made a significant step ahead in performance, but Intel didn't. Carbon for some reason is intel-only, so it was significantly slower and more expensive than other alternatives, for example T14s which is almost as thin and light

So basicly get t14/14s and for less money you get same or even more.

April 1, 2024 -
Hello Guys, I want to buy a refurbished Thinkpad for University. I am studing computer science.
Which is the better option.
X1C 6th gen with 16GB Ram, 512GB SSD , Intel Core i7 8650U 1,9 GHz (450€)
OR
X1C 8th gen with 16GB Ram, 512GB SSD , Interl Core i7 10610U 1,8 GHz (650€).
Yes they are not super cheap, but it is very difficult to find good ones with the right keyboard layout in my Country. Added to that, did someone tried to run games on these Laptops? I have a Gaming PC but i am curious what you can do with them.
Thank you a lot

I would absolutely go for the gen 6. The 8650u is practically a binned 45w processor that you can still exploit performance and battery life via throttle stop and there are articles/blog posts online detailing the process. intel did not patch that processor to prevent undervolting. Also, the gen 6 has a microsd card slot - the gen 8 does not. Outside those two reasons, the gen 6 high end IPS display (2k, 500 nit, 100% P3) is way better than the gen 8 high-end IPS display (4k, 500 nit) because the gen 8 isn't as color accurate, is 4k so uses more battery, and has PWM flickering. If neither of these for sale come with the high-end display, you can always easily swap it out for the higher end offering and you can find the panels still for cheap in 2024. Ironically the gen 6 super color accurate panel will work in the gen 8 - no problem. No whitelisting issues, etc. It's a 1:1 replacement.

6th gen owner chiming in. Have had zero issues after 4 years. Used daily, been to many countries and I just toss it in my hand luggage without a case. Still looks brand new.
