Mind checking the prices on something like the E14 gen 2 or gen 3 (dual channel ram preferrably). They tend to be on the cheaper side specially on the used market and and pretty neat machines, very modern and powerful and the build quality is not as bad as they make it to be - specially if you get one with the aluminium body.

An 8th gen i7 is enough, I would pick a model with 16gig of ram as its not upgradable and 8gig will be quite restrictive with some software. The integrated graphics will do it for what you will doing in university. Between E15 and the X1 is personnal preference. Do you want a plastic case but more powerful or an older laptop with nice magnesium/carbon case.

I do love my x1 carbon, it has 4k which I could take or leave for my particular usage of development and 3d modeling, just got a great deal a few years ago. It is light as hell with the magnesium and carbon fiber body, but carrying it by just a corner doesn't bend. Trackpad kinda sucks compared to Mac but isn't bad, kinda small though. I daily a 16" MacBook Pro provided by work and every time I grab my x1 I miss how light and great it feels to carry around.
