Hello everyone,
I would like to buy the Lenovo Yogabook 9i laptop (the one with dual screens) before the end of the year. I'm looking for some honest opinions and reviews about this laptop to help me decide whether or not to get it.
I've been using my Lenovo daily for about a few weeks now - the purchase was intended as a replacement for my iPad which I was using as a laptop full time since about 2016. I also wanted something touchscreen, and something I could use when lying in bed (I was skeptical of Surface Pro's abilities to support the screen for that, which is why I chose this laptop instead).
On a day to day basis I use the laptop to -
Writing
Taking notes and reading (I self study with a made up curriculum etc)
Illustration
Occasional coding when I hyper fixate on a project
Since I wanted a replacement for my iPad, I will be making iPad comparisons throughout this review.
1. Overall laptop
The look of this laptop is fantastic, it's very sleek, a bit on the heavy side but that's expected with two screens. I love the magnetic keyboard, I pretty much use that all the time as the virtual keyboard still feels a bit unnatural to use. Touch screen is great, and the pencil is a nice addition.
I find the top widgets, when the keyboard is attached at the bottom, a bit useless and wish they'd be fully customizable - I tend to just use the upper half as half of the screen. SmartNotes part at the bottom right is great, but I wish it would be customizable and allow me to use other apps such as OneNote or just StickyNotes, since SmartNotes has limited notetaking abilities outside of the widget feature.
I still make a lot of mistakes and erros when trying to type etc due to the bottom touchscreen randomly reacting to my skin, which is a bit annoying (for example, as I was typing this it randomly deleted my sentence).
2. The Pen
The pencil isn't the greatest and it's probably the worst pencil I've ever used. This is a huge problem with illustration - it makes it very difficult to draw accurately, but I'll focus more on that in a little bit.
Other than that, no problems with the pen, although I do accidentally hit the shortcut buttons a lot, so I have to disable them most of the time - I do find the eraser shortcut button quite handy though.
I do miss the auto-snap function the iPad has at the top, althoug this does work if you attach the bluetooth keyboard - the pen magnetically snaps on top of the keyboard. I do wish there was another option though.
I'm waiting for any third party compatibility pencils - if you guys know any that I should check out do let me know.
3. Sound & Image Quality
The sound is AMAZING. I kept thinking something's wrong with my hearing cause I've never heard anything like this before and felt like I really missed out on an amazing sound experience before buying it - thoroughly impressed.
No complaints on the image quality either, although I'm far from an expert on this topic.
4. Using it for what I intended to use it
Writing
No issues here, obviously. I love the two screens for research, and I finally gave in and started using Edge, I find the split screen on Edge quite handy (though obviously the same result can be achieved in Chrome etc). I love the bluetooth keyboard, it's all fine to use and the typing sound is very satisfying.
Taking notes and reading (I self study with a made up curriculum etc)
Alright, I have a big problem with this. It took some time to get used to OneNote, and I'm still getting used to it. The main functionalities I needed was to read books somewhere and obviously to take notes (I find Kindle etc readers not suitable for my needs (I want to highlight and make notes when I read, even if it is just regular books) and I really missed the iOS Books app ;().
I loved GoodNotes on iPad, but the Windows version is very limited, and doesn't include custom fonts, which is a huge deal breaker for me. But it has all other functionalities I needed, so I'm still deciding which app to pick and just use full time. Nebo has the same problem as GoodNotes + the AI option doesn't work on Windows, so it's main selling feature makes it completely useless on Windows. GoodNotes is the better choice for the A4 format, but the lack of custom fonts really bothers me when it comes to taking notes, so I use it for reading, and then taking notes in OneNote.
When GoodNotes adds custom fonts to Windows, I'll be switching to that instantly.
Illustration
Because the pen is so awkward to use, I find illustration a nightmare, and I'd love any tips on this. It just feels odd, and not intuitive. I understand Adobe Fresco is the go-to app for illustration and that is still taking me some time to get used to. I also need to figure out how to stop the pen from having such shaky lines when my hands shake as I haven't had that issue with the Apple Pen.
This is still an adjustment, but I guess if needed I can continue to use my iPad for illustration.
Occasional coding when I hyperfixate on a project
Again, amazing for coding and any research that goes into that. It's the two screens that really add a nice touch and overall just being able to multitask by touchscreen etc. Zero complaints in this area.
5. Overall
This is a laptop with a lot of potential, and when the apps catch up to be suitable for Windows touchscreen apps, it'll be amazing. My annoyances are easily fixable and adaptable, so I'll still keep this laptop and see if I can adjust to it. I do wish the widgets would be more techy, but that might come with updates (I hope).
Overall, I do think it does feel like I'm screencasting a Windows PC onto an iPad, which is something I did in the past and that came with quite a few bugs and lags, but then again, maybe I just need to adapt, because it does take time to get used to something like this.
Do I think it's worth the price for what I need to use it? No - luckily, I got it on sale at Currys, but I probably wouldn't go for the full price.
Any tips on how to adjust are much appreciated - I do think these are minor complaints that will be fixed once things become a habit, so I'm not too worried. Hope this review helps anyone who's switching from iPad to the Lenovo yoga book 9i :)
