I finally realize why people constantly ask about jeans in this sub. Real denim subreddits are more dedicated to vintage finds or raw denim stuff, leading me back here.
So I've been wearing Wrangler cowboy cuts for a while now. I've worn the original fit and slim fit. Love 'em for the durability, but I found the Levi 527s and realized I was super into the flared-out bootcut as opposed to Wrangler's straighter bootcut.
Thing is, the 527s aren't cut quite right in the waist for me. Low-rise jeans and I ain't quite on the same page. So I found the 517 online, but can't find anywhere to try it on in person.
How does it compare in fit to the 501s or 527s? Or even to Wrangler's cowboy cut jeans?

Levi's 517's boot cut used to be nice, tough denim that lasted years. The more you wore them, the more comfortable they got. The denim they use now is thin crap. The ones I bought recently have a soft, 'designer jean' feel to them, and it's horrible. It just Ticks me off.

Get the 517’s. They’ve changed the cut of them- they’ve always had a higher rise but now they’re slightly slimmer through the thigh than older models are. You can always have them tailored as well. I’ve wrongly been calling these 527’s but they are 517’s that I’ve had tailored to fit like 527’s. So to clarify they are 517’s. It’s an older pair but as I’ve said the newer cuts are being slimmed in the thigh. I have both 527’s and 517’s. The low rise isn’t for everyone so depending on what fits best, get the 517’s.

I'm a noob at this and don't have the money for a high end pair, but I needed some new jeans and tried to find something that could potentially work. These were old stock at Cavenders (a Western store chain in Atlanta), so I'm not sure what the waah was was called. But they're not the current "rinse" offering Levi's has
I didn't soak these so I'm kinda worried they're going to shrink a lot. We'll see. Has anyone faded these before? Any tips?

Great find! They are my fave Levi's model. Those are raw denim bootcut 517s, and they are made with a 14oz denim, whereas the STF 501 unsanforized denim feels more like a 13oz denim after being fully shrunk down. And they will fade great, even better than STF raw denim 501s IMO. Levi's colorway name for your 517s are "Rigid", which means raw denim. The model number, Levi's PC9 (9-digit Product Code) on the care tag inside, should say "00517-0217", where the "0217" stands for the "Rigid" wash, but they aren't washed yet by you or by Levi's, so not really a wash at all. They are sanforized, so they will shrink when finally washed, about 1" in the waist (which should stretch back out some) and about 1" in the inseam if washed/dried like normies do. They will shrink much less if hand-washed in cold water and hung to dry. They are still sold at many western wear stores, such as Cavender's, and at Amazon too still , but with a higher price these days.

Looking good for two weeks! 517 is a sanforized cut so they won’t shrink. Just keep on wearing and wash when dirty and they will look amazing in no time.

There’s only so many options you can do with pants so companies just cycle through them. Beating a dead horse here, but fashion brands always need you to be buying. New styles get pushed so your old stuff feels inadequate. Once you’ve stocked up on the lastest trend, then it’s time for them to push something else. I wore bootcuts from like grade 5-9, and while I think people can make them look good, I’d feel pretty dumb to start wearing them again now at my age.
