r/Appliances on Reddit: Can someone advise whether to replace LG compressor or new fridge
April 27, 2023 -

Our LG french door refrigerator stopped cooling this past Sunday. The fridge section is about 55 degrees F and not sure on the freezer temp, but its not freezing. Model#: LMXS30776S

The fridge is only 5 years old. We had a appliance repair guy out here and provided a estimate of $1800 for the compressor replacement. Does that price seem fair? Never thought it would be that high!

Do we call another appliance repair shop or purchase a new fridge?

Is it cheaper to buy a new unit?
That’s a great question! While every situation is unique, when it comes to repairs, we typically advise against costs exceeding 50% of a new unit’s price unless special circumstances apply. Replacing an appliance involves various expenses like purchase, delivery, and installation fees, plus potential costs for old appliance removal and warranties. Disposing appliances improperly can harm the environment, release pollutants, and waste valuable materials. r/Appliances on Reddit: Has LG really resolved the refrigerator compressor issue, or is it still a ticking time bomb?
July 4, 2023 -

2016 LG French door refrigerator and already replaced the compressor under the class action suit in 2020.

Having additional problems which I think are sealed system related - if so, I will replace rather than repair.

I have a tight space and LG has the best fit and features, price etc …. but my logical side is screaming avoid LG (and Samsung) at all costs.

So, my question for those in the field is have they really fixed the compressor problem.?

Thanks

UPDATE

Thanks for the responses

Here are a few more things on my experience with LG snd what else I can find on the linear compressors.

  • My compressor was replaced in late 2020 as part of the class action, with supposedly the improved model (FLS075LANA replacing the FLB075LANA) and that did not fix it long term. This was with the R134 refrigerant. I don’t know if it is the same compressor that will be used for the R600 but if yes I would definitely avoid it and all LGs with linear compressors.

  • I read that the core problem was an aluminum lining on the compressor that was not stable in contact with the compressor oil and flaked off over time, blocking capillary tubes etc. I dont know if that is true but replacing the compressor with the newer one still didn’t fix it for me long term and I know that the they purged the lines and changed filter etc when they replaced it first time.

  • Even though the compressor has a 10yr warranty with LG, that is for parts only for 5+yr and I was quoted minimum $800+ for labor with no guarantee that will fix anything long term.

  • Bottom line, I’m not convinced that LG has fixed the linear compressors. I could be wrong and only time will tell, but I’m not giving them any more $.

Some other points relating to all fridges

  • They don’t build ‘em like they used to is a universal sentiment

  • More bells and whistles = more stuff to break

  • Ice and water in the door is laughing in the face of the fridge gods and you will be punished

  • Old school freezer on top with fridge on bottom and nothing else is your best bet, but that won’t fly in my house

  • Depending on who you ask all fridges suck, but whirlpool and kitchenaid seem to do better and have more available parts and are typically easier/cheaper to repair … for the more basic models

So, what did I get?

  • I was ready to pull the trigger on a whirlpool or kitchenaid, but the shelving for counter depth in both has a weird approx 2” gap in the back which looks like a PITA so they got vetoed in my house unfortunately.

  • I ended up getting a Bosch 800 - needed the counter depth and hopefully no ice/water in door will help. Great so far (week 1 of course)

  • Dual compressor is enabling excellent temperature control - but maybe breaking my rule of adding more parts to break?

  • More $ than I wanted to spend and $ doesn’t guarantee longevity but I got some very solid recs for this model from owners and local repair guys that I trust.

  • Bought it from a local appliance shop that does their own service - very important to do this no matter what fridge you buy.

Time for a (perfectly chilled, for once) beer!

r/Appliances on Reddit: LG 2023 - Are the compressors fixed?
March 3, 2023 -

I'm in the market for a counter depth refrigerator under 2k I'd like a bottom freezer but don't necessarily need it to be french door. I don't want any frills (thanks to the advice of Bens Appliances and Junk) - no need for a water dispenser, wifi, etc. The most spacious option I've found is the LG Counter Depth MAX. However, I know that LG has had major compressor issues and I don't want to even consider this fridge unless they have fixed their linear compressor.

On the same note, are Samsungs still a bad idea, even if they don't have an ice maker in the fridge? Particularly something like https://www.lowes.com/pd/Samsung-5101-11-7-cu-ft-French-Door-Refrigerator-with-Ice-Maker-Fingerprint-Resistant-Stainless-Steel-ENERGY-STAR/5001657087?

Any advice? And if not this fridge, what would you go with? Thanks!

November 28, 2024 - We replaced the LG with a Bosch refrigerator, the workmanship of the Bosch is miles ahead of the LG. I suspect LG offered a great profit margin to their resellers like Home Dept and Lowes, and that is why retailers continue to sell the linear compressor LG refrigerators.

Bought a Whirlpool but I have a excellent condition LG minus a compressor. Have researched and a conventional compressor can be put in with minor wiring changes and a relay. Looking at under $300 for parts. Have been thinking of attempting this wondering if anyone has done this. Have torch, vac pump, ... Relays are easy to fix -- it's just electrical. I've done it twice. Once it worked. The second time, something deeper in the compressor was broken, so replacing the relay cost $70 and didn't fix the problem.
