FreeCAD or LibreCAD for 2D Cad Sketches?
FreeCAD isn't really meant for 2D drawing, as in AutoCad. LibreCAD is more suited. Qcad is also OK. More on reddit.com

😂 OP starts with declaring dissatisfaction with AutoDesk. Then gets replies recommending TinkerCAD or Fusion360. Both AutoDesk products. I use FreeCAD because there are no licensing shenanigans. Go check the EULA for any free version of the proprietary options. If you agree, go right ahead. If not, it's essentially FreeCAD or OpenSCAD. I would probably be ok using OpenSCAD, but haven't tried it because I'm simultaneously learning and teaching my child. So FreeCAD is a more logical choice for me. LibreCAD is focused on 2d drafting. A quick look interface will show an abyssal difference between them. Usually open source was “sold” as perfect software, but in the cad world, these softwares usually are not useful for professional workflows. LibreCAD is nice for hobbies. I just started with LibreCAD and leared the basics from several YouTube videos. The functions you are looking for are there but not available as a command (sadly). You have to select them from the toolbar. BTW the rectangle tools are in the toolbar but they are grouped within the line tool. I work with LibreCAD v2.2.1.1. Hope that helps. Cheers. I know that both can do 2D CAD sketches but I'm not sure what the differences are for both, what should I choose? I'm just looking for an alternative for AutoCAD on Linux since that's what we are using for our class, I'm guessing that LibreCAD is more suitable for this? Thanks!

FreeCAD isn't really meant for 2D drawing, as in AutoCad. LibreCAD is more suited. Qcad is also OK.

depends on your taste, if you're drafting architecture the BIM and Arch workbenches can be very capable but you need to take the time to learn them. Yorik van Havre's youtube channel has all the training and demonstration of those tools.

So I've been eager to learn meself some CAD. Yet, all those cloud shenanigans Autodesk does nowadays really annoy me. I'm not against clouds, mind you, but the save limit and active and inactive projects, workspaces, synchronisations and whatnot feel like overhead that just gets in the way for me as I stumble through tutorials frustratedly shouting at my screen because the point the tutorial wants me to move is just not there.
So: as someone who is brand new to CAD and wants to use it for 3d printing almost exclusively: which one do I start with?

I've tried to use/like FreeCAD but it isn't easy. I haven't had any crashing problems but the UI is not uo to par. I spent a fair amount of time learning and fighting FreeCAD. I knew what I wanted to do but it was difficult to do it. I installed Fusion and as much as I hate the cloud and the limits on the free version I have been able to do things quickly compared to FreeCAD because I am not fighting a poor UI. I love the idea of supporting open source software and using it however the jury is out. I don't have the time to fight with FreeCAD to get the work done.
