Simple question. I used to connect my old phone to my tv using a lightning-to-av adapter... then plugging in HDMI. Easy peasy. Worked so great I bought a few adapters for different locations.
Recently wife upgraded me to an iPhone 15 (ugh), which apparently has "USB-C port". So my old lightning-to-av adapters no longer fit.
So the big question - if I buy a "USB-C to Lighting Adapter", will the old av adapters work?

Hope you don’t mind me reviving this old thread but I was curious to know if you tried an adapter or bought the adapter that robartlyn recommended. I wound up upgrading to the 16 pro max and would like to know if I can still get my old adapter to work or not.

I think that depends on whether or not the old AV adapters use USB protocol to communicate with the phone. Honestly, I'd bite the bullet and get new av adapters since USB-C has official and standardized support for video output. The Lightning implementation was kind of a hack. Or you can just try it and return the USB-C to Lightning adapter if it doesn't work...

I've read conflicting reports on this. I've currently got the Apple lightning AV adapter which works great connecting iPhone 11 to my TV. Now that I've switched to iPhone 15 will the UsbC to lightning adapter work with it or am I gonna have to bite the bullet and buy a UsbC AV adapter?

I’ve been gaming with a controller quite a bit since the release of iOS 13. Until a few days ago I was using one of those flexible arms to hold my phone and to keep my hands free, but now I have the Lightning to Digital AV adapter. Functionally it’s a Lightning to HDMI, but iPhones don’t technically support HDMI out so Apple has a special SoC inside this adapter doing some magic to make it all work. That’s why they charge $50, and it’s why you really need to avoid the third party adapters. It’s not a simple device.
Anyway, it works great with my iPhone XR. I’ve been playing Sky, Fortnite, Call of Duty, Steam Link and Apple Arcade on the big screen. When you are playing a game the screen is mirrored on your TV(turn your brightness down to keep your phone cool while mirroring). Games will be shown to your TV in the aspect ratio of your phone. I’m using an iPhone XR so the games that support ultra widescreen show up with black bars on the top and bottom of the screen. If you mess around your TV’s aspect ratio settings you can get an image that fills the screen if you really want to, but it will cut off the sides of the image.

Functionally it’s a Lightning to HDMI, but iPhones don’t technically support HDMI out so Apple has a special SoC inside this adapter doing some magic to make it all work. Apperanlty it's not that the iPhone (or iPad in my case) doesn't support HDMI, but that Lightning port itself doesn't support it. I mostly use it with my iPad to play emulators on the TV. If a game has cloud saves I’ll output from my iPhone instead since the iPad is 4:3. There’s some lag, but I only notice it in games that require precise input, like a golf game using a meter for shots. Otherwise it’s great.

Yes I have, but I dont suggest since you will notice heavy input lag. It works yes, but if you want to be competitive then no. Edit: basically bought the dongle for this specific reason, fired it up only for one match and the input lag was very noticeable. Waste of money 😃 Maybe some people can manage, but gosh, feels like I press button and it takes ages to mirror what happens on screen. Good for movies though. Honestly most useless dongle.

This is how a lot of IOS mobile streamers capture their device. The device you show into a capture card. You can play it on the PC screen this way but almost all play on the device screen still. You need to use a capture program like elgato and others offer as direct to obs gives you a HDCP error. I personally have one but prefer to use direct usb and a more light weight capture program as I already am running OBS and the capture programs above can have both redundant and conflicting features with OBS. If you have a smart tv or anything that can have airplay you can also cast to the screen that way but that will be dependent on wifi for input and visual lag.
