Unlike USB data, video is directional. You need specific hardware to send video and different hardware to recieve video. Phones have hardware to send video, but are not designed to recieve it, because for the average consumer it is never required. Simple as that. Sony had a smartphone, one of the more recent Xperia Pros I think, that had a MicroHDMI input for that purpose, but it still was an extra port with dedicated capture chip More on reddit.com

As the title says.
I know I can wirelessly send a signal but the resolution and lag is awful.
I know I can use a monitor but my phone is right there in my pocket all the time.
I know I can use that acsoon device but it’s more rigmarole again and may as well as just the ninja.
What’s the story with this? Why can I send video out of my iPhone but not back in? Will this ever work?

because USB protocol is different than HDMI protocol. your camera outputs feed through HDMI protocol, filled with data that's only usable to HDMI decoder/controller in your monitor. your iphone has USB protocol, not HDMI. that's what the accsoon is for, translating HDMI inputs into data that the USB controller in your iphone can understand. that requires computational power. so definitely need something more than just cables.

I’ve been gaming with a controller quite a bit since the release of iOS 13. Until a few days ago I was using one of those flexible arms to hold my phone and to keep my hands free, but now I have the Lightning to Digital AV adapter. Functionally it’s a Lightning to HDMI, but iPhones don’t technically support HDMI out so Apple has a special SoC inside this adapter doing some magic to make it all work. That’s why they charge $50, and it’s why you really need to avoid the third party adapters. It’s not a simple device.
Anyway, it works great with my iPhone XR. I’ve been playing Sky, Fortnite, Call of Duty, Steam Link and Apple Arcade on the big screen. When you are playing a game the screen is mirrored on your TV(turn your brightness down to keep your phone cool while mirroring). Games will be shown to your TV in the aspect ratio of your phone. I’m using an iPhone XR so the games that support ultra widescreen show up with black bars on the top and bottom of the screen. If you mess around your TV’s aspect ratio settings you can get an image that fills the screen if you really want to, but it will cut off the sides of the image.

Functionally it’s a Lightning to HDMI, but iPhones don’t technically support HDMI out so Apple has a special SoC inside this adapter doing some magic to make it all work. Apperanlty it's not that the iPhone (or iPad in my case) doesn't support HDMI, but that Lightning port itself doesn't support it. I mostly use it with my iPad to play emulators on the TV. If a game has cloud saves I’ll output from my iPhone instead since the iPad is 4:3. There’s some lag, but I only notice it in games that require precise input, like a golf game using a meter for shots. Otherwise it’s great.
