Request: can we get a pockets column? I can't stand jackets without pockets. It's nice to have a place to keep your hands warmer and put stuff in for camp chores. Lots of the pullovers/etc lack pockets. I realize for cottage companies it saves some annoying labor, but the weight and warmth penalty can't be that much for the convenience. More on reddit.com

I'm someone who gets cold outside pretty easily but when I was a PCT hiker, for one thing I got acclimatized to being outside and didn't get cold nearly as easily and for another thing, I spent very little time just sitting around. When I was on trail I was either hiking or I was in my tent. The only time I ever used my down jacket (Patagonia down sweater) was in trail towns from the beginning of the trail to some time in June when it was full on summer. Then I didn't need the jacket at all. I finished the trail at the end of August. Probably the only time I wished I had a warmer down jacket was one night in the Sierras camped at Tyndall Creek. tl;dr; The difference among these jackets is probably not going to be that crucial and you're going to acclimatize some. I'd buy the best jacket you can afford, whatever "best" means to you. More on reddit.com
