I need to buy a vacuum for an elderly family member, where weight is a large concern. To give you an idea, they can just barely handle my Miele S7280 Jazz which is 21.5 lbs and self-propelled. I also am not sure they could handle a cordless that could not stand upright on its own.

The Hoover ONEPWR HEPA looked like a great option at only 11 pounds, but their place is 50% flooring 50% carpet so no brushroll shutoff is a no-go. Unfortunately all the other cordless vacs in my price range on the recommended list are "Dyson" syle.

From the recommended list the UH30301 seems to be the lightest (under $600) by a good amount at 15.9 lbs. I think maybe they might be able to handle that, but honestly even that is likely on the heavy side. Especially without a swivel.

Any suggestions for a light vacuum that will fit their needs? Budget is $400, but I might be able to stretch as high as $500 or $600.

I am also open to considering buying two units, one dedicated for carpet and one for flooring. But their place is pretty small so I would prefer not to.

Firstly- NO BAGS.

I know i know, how dare I?! But my parents are not going to clean the bag, they are not going to do it properly, and 3 months from now I'm gonna get a call and have to do it myself, and I don't want to have to do that considering I won't be living in their city for much longer. If they can't easily vacuum then they won't vacuum at all- which is horrendous and a health hazard.

They need something for their carpets and hardwood, the carpet is really roughed up, it's around 20 years old and not well taken care of, we had a Miele but it was literally so strong of a suction that even I couldn't get it to move across the carpet, it was like it was glued to the floor. It also had a bag attachment that you had to drag around with you, my father vacuumed for 15 minutes (not actually cleaning anything because he used the hardwood setting to get it to even move around and nothing was getting picked up) before he had to sit down and rest for an hour. it needs to be EASY TO USE and reasonably light weight.

They have a golden retriever, so definitely something that can pick up pet hair on carpet and hardwood. I'm not concerned about cordless or not, and our budget is around $300-400, I know it's not much but my mom doesn't understand that you need to invest in a good vacuum, not buy cheap "on sale" alternatives that die in a year. I can probably push the budget up to $500 if really needed, and we're in Canada so preferably something Canadian/on amazon CA to avoid the tariffs.
