Suitsupply is your best bet. Their staff are excellent and actually understand tailoring and fit (department store staff seem to be generally clueless about this). They have three options of fits, from cheapest to most expensive: 1) off the rack, minor tailoring 2) off the rack with more tailoring features 3) complete custom. I did the complete custom for my wedding, it was $1200 and then $100 for a tailored dress shirt, but you can do cheaper depending on the materials of the suit. More on reddit.com

I’m in my mid-twenties and I have recently moved to Chicago. Never owned a suit in my life. Now I think I have saved enough to get my first suit. I would like to know what all factors I should consider before making such a big investment. I have no clue at all. Specifically I would like to know how much I should spend, what color would be most ideal, and any other important aspects to consider while buying a custom suit. Thank you for any information or guidance.

Color should be either navy blue or charcoal grey, because both are appropriate for most things where a suit could be worn, like job interviews, weddings, funerals, fancy dates, etc., so if you’re only going to have one suit those are the colors that make sense. I’ve never done a custom suit so I can’t speak for the rest.

I assume you rarely have occasion to wear suits, since this is your first? Now would be a great time to spend way less than bespoke prices to get a feel for what style/cut/color you prefer. by Get several off the rack and add alterations at a decent department store. I got 4 suits when I moved here to interview in. My safe formal style was navy blue, boxy 80's style jackets and pants twice as wide and a foot longer than I needed that always made me look like a kid in dad's closet. (I'm 6'6" 270# btw, that fit was so much worse on a big guy.) I went to Macy's and spent $750 on the four with very different styles and colors and extra for alterations. I was pretty bold because if it wasn't a look that lasted for me, so what? They were cool though and I looked pretty great, especially in the Burberry knockoff plaid suit in a slim cut. Wait, slim, me? yeah they make slim cut suits in 50XL coat and 38W pants lol. After a few years all four became thread worn and had to be tossed. So I went to kick it up a notch and got similarly styled slim suits custom tailored at Zeglio in River North. Those two were about $1500 each, and I went for less expensive options where I could - I want to look good but Midas I am not. Friends of mine got their wedding suits there, going all out and spent like $20,000, so I definitely went the "cheap" route. That was 8 years ago and the suits look the same as when I first took them home. If I'd started with custom I never would have taken a style chance and learned the wonder of slim fit on a fat guy. Play around with styles and colors in cheaper, less built to last configurations to find what you like and what likes you. Then treat yo self! (Also the people at Zeglio were amazing, made me feel and look good throughout the whole process, and every time I wear one of those suits people who see me regularly always comment how dapper and impeccable I look. Worth every penny.)
