January 28, 2025 - The recent push back of at least 2 years of Intel’s Magdeburg Fab is a reminder that words are cheap and actions expensive, especially when it come to semiconductor foundries. In 2024 Europe control 7% of the world foundry capacity which means it must process 50% of its wafers elsewhere either by foundry ownership abroad or purchases to an open foundry such as TSMC, or Samsung Semiconductor.

r/BuyFromEU on Reddit: Why doesn’t Europe have a chip design giant like NVIDIA or AMD?
November 16, 2025 -

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about why Europe doesn’t have a major player in chip design like NVIDIA or AMD. We have world-class research institutions like Fraunhofer and IMEC, and we’re leaders in many niche areas (shoutout to Infineon and NXP!), but we don’t have a company that competes on the global stage for GPUs or CPUs.

Why is that?

What can we do?

It would be great if you could share any articles, papers or blogs on these topics.

Thank you a lot!!!

November 6, 2024 - The major leaps in AI we’ve witnessed over the last few years have both driven and been driven by advancements in semiconductor technology. AI innovation relies on smaller, more sophisticated chips, most of which tend to come from outside of Europe, produced by companies such as US-based tech leader Nvidia. Intel is an outlier in this respect, having developed a plan (now delayed) to build a fabrication plant (fab) in Europe, in line with its goal to deliver five nodes in four years.
