European Semiconductor Manufacturers
Why doesn’t Europe have a chip design giant like NVIDIA or AMD?
First European high-performance chips to be made in Dresden
Semiconductor manufacturing capacity of different countries by chip size. Taiwan, South Korea, USA, China, Japan etc.
Most of us have probably heard that many Chips that we use in our devices sadly do not come from Europe. Companies like TSMC, AMD, Intel and Nvidia claim the stage. But we do have european manufacturers!
Here is a list with manufacturers known to me:

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about why Europe doesn’t have a major player in chip design like NVIDIA or AMD. We have world-class research institutions like Fraunhofer and IMEC, and we’re leaders in many niche areas (shoutout to Infineon and NXP!), but we don’t have a company that competes on the global stage for GPUs or CPUs.
Why is that?
What can we do?
It would be great if you could share any articles, papers or blogs on these topics.
Thank you a lot!!!
