I’ve been thinking a lot lately about why Europe doesn’t have a major player in chip design like NVIDIA or AMD. We have world-class research institutions like Fraunhofer and IMEC, and we’re leaders in many niche areas (shoutout to Infineon and NXP!), but we don’t have a company that competes on the global stage for GPUs or CPUs.

Why is that?

What can we do?

Which bits do you mean? We have ASML which designs and manufactures the equipment required to actually make the chips designed by all those other companies. ARM holdings designs the instruction sets and CPU designs used in technology that is ubiquitous in modern day life.
