June 26, 2026 - List literals are probably the most popular way to create a list object in Python. These literals are fairly straightforward. They consist of a pair of square brackets enclosing a comma-separated series of objects. ... This syntax creates a list of n items by listing the items in an enclosing pair of square brackets. Note that you don’t have to declare the items’ type or the list’s size beforehand.

2 days ago - You might have noticed that methods like insert, remove or sort that only modify the list have no return value printed – they return the default None. [1] This is a design principle for all mutable data structures in Python. Another thing you might notice is that not all data can be sorted or compared. For instance, [None, 'hello', 10] doesn’t sort because integers can’t be compared to strings and None can’t be compared to other types. Also, there are some types that don’t have a defined ordering relation. For example, 3+4j < 5+7j isn’t a valid comparison.

August 4, 2026 - The most common way to create a list is by placing items inside square brackets [], separated by commas. For example, cart = ["T-shirt", "Lamp", "Pen"] print(cart) # A list of mixed data types my_list = [1, "Python", 3.14] print(my_list) # Empty list my_list = [] print(my_list)

You can type a list as of Python 3.5
https://docs.python.org/3/library/typing.html
from typing import List
vector: List[float] = list()
or
from typing import List
vector: List[float] = []
Python is dynamically typed however https://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0484/
Typing makes it easier to read code, easier understand it, make efficient use of your IDE tooling and create higher quality software. I guess that's why it's in the PEP.

Like Dominus said,
from typing import List is deprecated since Python 3.9.
You don't need to import anything, you can just use list.
Example:
my_list: list[float] = list()

They are used by other programs such as IDEs (integrated development environments) and static analysis tools like linters/type checkers to validate if your functions are called with compatible arguments.) The *in* construct on its own is an easy way to test if an element appears in a list (or other collection) -- value in collection -- tests if the value is in the collection, returning True/False. list = ['larry', 'curly', 'moe'] if 'curly' in list: print('yay') ## yay · The for/in constructs are very commonly used in Python code and work on data types other than list, so you should just memorize their syntax.
