I think if this was a made up character it may hit the audience differently but since it isn't, they can see through his delusions. His song reminds me of a toxic friend/partner. They think they did nothing wrong. In fact, they think they did really well when in truth they didn't. Then by the end, the threat comes out "I will kill your friends and family to remind you of my love" brings out the true feelings this character has. He doesn't want to rule with your best intentions in mind, he wants to rule for more control and selfish reasons. More on reddit.com

This feels a little silly to suggest, but all of Groff's songs in Hamilton were nods to the Beatles and other bands from the British pop invasion (get it?). A lot of different Beatles songs are echoed in some of the music lines. You might look into some other 1960s-era britpop.

I just had to ask you guys. I heard "You'll be back" for the first time like, 2 hours ago. And this song just makes me really, really sad. Like, at some point, heavy, in a way. I watched Jonathan Groff's performance and while the audience were laughing, I can't help but feel sorry for this character.
Even before watching any videos, listening to it... there's just something about the beat? The tune? I can't seem to put my finger on it. Am I just imagining this? Thoughts?
Edit: I forgot to mention I first listened to this song without historical context beforehand. Still sad though but not that much anymore. Thanks for the responses. 😅

I have trouble sympathizing with a character that says that he'll kill your friends and family to make you "love him". The music doesn't say "sad" to me. It's a playful song with funny influence from The Beatles (because he's British). The character doesn't makes me sad either. He's clearly a joke. He's spitting and angry, and then sings "da da daa da da" in such a maniac way, it's just funny and creepy. So yeah I am curious why you feel like that!
