Hey, I have a good amount of experience growing LBS from seed in pots. Some notes: LBS have a lower germination rate than many other grasses so definitely use several seeds per pot and thin once they establish a bit. I personally overseed to ensure every pot is producing. Opt for deep pots. LBS don’t do much growing up top in the first year so you want to have ample room for root growth down below. They can stay outside during the winter. Cold won’t be a problem, however root rot is. Grasses generally die overwinter because they stay wet for too long. So, look for a space that is covered from rain. This method will definitely work with Indian grass, bluestems, and Panicum. Don’t worry too much about fertilizing. Phosphorus (P) helps roots develop so a small boost of that via an organic fertilizer is ok, but only when the plant is actively growing in the heat. Generally less is more since native grasses are used to lean soils. Feel free to message me with more questions if you have them. Been growing native grass in pots to sell for a couple of years now.
