I'm in my mid 20's and despite being an artist with good fashion taste, I am HORRIBLE at interior design. My apartments have always felt cold, awkward, and not "homey". I think I have always been attracted to cool tones and grey's which might be contributing to the coldness. I also don't know where to hang things on the wall without it looking like an awkward thing randomly sitting on the wall, if that makes sense.
My boyfriend and I are moving into a nice 2 bd apartment with some more space than we are used to. I really want the space to feel cozy and welcoming, which is not something I know how to do. When I look online at furniture and decorations, the only things I like are extremely expensive or it all ends up adding up into an expensive endeavor finding things to go together.
When I go to my friends places, they all seem to get it right although I know they are also on a budget like me. I have a friend who lives in an apartment and doesn't make that much money, but somehow has the coziest place.
What am I missing? Lighting? Going to thrift shops for affordable furniture?
The only thing I don't feel comfortable getting second-hand is the couch for my own personal reasons.
I want to have warm tones, with some color thrown in, but have no clue where to start. We are pretty much starting fresh with all of our furniture. Any advice for me?
