How do you graph log functions with a calculator? | Purplemath
I know I have to have all positive x-values inside the log, so I start the TABLE listing at x = 1, and go from there. I'd still like to have some plot points between zero and one, so I adjust the initial value (that is, the start value) and the increment (that is, the count-by amount) to get some additional plot points between x = 0 and x = 1: Using these points (plotted to one or two decimal places), I end up with the same graph as before. ... Depending upon your calculator's software, you will either get blank spaces in your table for the y-values when x = 0 and when x is negative; or the slots for those y-values will display "error", "undefined", or some other error code; or else the program will crash.

r/mathematics on Reddit: Why do my logarithmic functions graph wrong?
December 12, 2023 -
On both my TI-84 and Desmos, when I plug in log functions it gives me an incomplete graph. The line just stops at some point under y=0. I’ll include pictures of the graphs of the function f(x)=2+ln(x-4). These graphs both seem to suggest that the range of this function is from some negative number to + infinity, when the range of log functions should be all real numbers. This happens with any log function I input, any ideas?

It's just a display issue. There's some pixel where the value is either too small for the calculator to work with (that would be -(21024 on desmos, at least) or complex and thus not displayed on these graphs (true for all x < 4, in your function). Since desmos (seems to) use double-precision floats, keep in mind that fully half of all floats are between -1 and 1, so having the asymptote at 4 actually loses a lot of precision. EDIT: Just tried it. The "bottom" of the asymptote moves "up" logarithmically with c in ln(x+c), which suggests precision stuff.

Half my students never realize there's an issue. They just believe what they see.
