I shoot with a Canon 80D, should I download C-log as the flat neutral color profile isn't giving me enough information for grading?
That camera doesn't have log. You see people marketing fake log for it. https://www.eoshd.com/news/eoshd-c-log-and-film-simulation-picture-profiles-for-canon/ While it is certainly flatter than defaults, it's still rec709. They also do a really shitty thing and call it c-log (custom log) to confuse people thinking it is clog (canon log). The conversion tools for real clog are going to destroy your footage if you use them on the fake log More on reddit.com

Can someone explain to me why the Canon R10 doesn’t have a Log profile
It's impossible to know without internal Canon design details. Maybe the processor is slower or has missing features (a.k.a. "semiconductor binning" ). Maybe the sensor to processor pathway doesn't have enough bandwidth. Maybe it is just artificial product differentiation (a.k.a. "money"). Who knows. More on reddit.com

People also ask

What is the difference between Canon Log, Canon Log 2 and Canon Log 3?

The original Canon Log delivers a dynamic range of approximately 12 stops, Canon Log 2 up to 16 stops, and Canon Log 3 up to 14 stops. Canon Log 2 retains more detail in darker areas than Canon Log 3 but also features an elevated noise floor. Canon Log 3 is easier to grade thanks to producing a cleaner image and retains the same amount of highlight information as Canon Log 2.

What is Canon Log used for?

Canon Log is used to capture video footage that has a wider dynamic range and exposure latitude than standard video. The Canon Log tone curve is applied at the point of capture to retain more details in the highlights and shadows compared to standard video.

Which Canon Log is best for low light?

Canon Log 2 is the ideal choice for when maximum detail is required, particularly in low-light scenes to extract shadow information. However, it will also cause elevated noise in those darker regions of the image and therefore require more time in post-production.

January 7, 2026 - The log gamma profile began gaining industrial popularity since 2005, when Arri released Arriflex D-20 which provided original Log-C gamma through HD-SDI video output, and further in 2008, when Sony released CineAlta F35 camera (and its 2005 Panavision Genesis sibling) with S-Log video recording on HDCAM-SR tape. Those camera releases boosted digital cinematography deployment. For consumer and prosumer cameras, Canon released Cinema EOS C300, which provided Canon Log video recording function, while Sony released S-Log2 profile on its Alpha 7II digital still camera, allowing low budget filmmakers to produce film-like motion pictures.

Which Canon DSLRs, Mirrorless, and Cinema cameras have a C-log profile not listed here?

https://www.canon-europe.com/pro/stories/enhance-filmmaking-with-canon-log/

The Canon 1DC I know had C-Log 1, yet it's not listed there (probably because it's old as hell). Not all of the specs are always clear on which cameras have C-log for video and a comprehensive list would be super useful from any of the Canon supernerds out there!

Additional question, does Magic Lantern apply log profiles to cameras that didn't have the profile before? Might wanna get an oldie but goldie and "jailbreak" it and turn in into a video beast (FF preferably).

April 7, 2021 - And, although the process of downscaling from 8K to 4K will boost the number a bit, it's never going to significantly exceed 12 stops of DR capture. As such, the C-Log3 curve seems a pretty good match for the camera, and it's unlikely that Canon will add the even wider DR C-Log2 profile.

r/videography on Reddit: I shoot with a Canon 80D, should I download C-log as the flat neutral color profile isn't giving me enough information for grading?
January 26, 2023 -

I've edited RAW photos but technical video / cinematic is new ground to me. I'm learning. Do I need to download and install C log or something else? (Using Final Cut Pro X)

I tried color correcting / grading a test shot from today and can't get much clarity from it while I did shoot at a nice balanced level using natural light outside. I am using the NEUTRAL color profile at 24fps, shutter at 50 with a 50mm 1.4 lense.

The shot has some cool moments but I couldn't get what I wanted out of it as far as the overall clarity and feel. Ya know those color grading YouTube vids with the quick reveal before and after where the before always has that grayish overlay tint and then it looks beautiful? What's all the before stuff?

For reference I am a recording engineer. I understand getting a good take in the studio by way of a good performance with a well balanced and premeditated idea for a sound. You can't polish a turd. I like an intense cinematic look so I'm trying to do all the BEFORE work right before I put my SD card into my computer to load my footage.

Thanks this sub is awesome.

Can you post some footage (or at least screenshots) so we can see what you're working with? It's just about impossible to offer good advice without understanding what footage you're working with, but here are my initial thoughts. Keep in mind that you're shooting video with a stills camera. The camera has certain limitations (most notably bit rate and bit depth) that will make color grading somewhat more difficult regardless of the color profile you shoot in. I spent years shooting on a Canon 7D, and the footage was always fairly difficult to work with. Installing Magic Lantern and increasing the bit rate did help, especially when using CineStyle too. I'm not very familiar with Final Cut X (I edit in Resolve on PCs) but generally speaking, you'll want to focus on correction first followed by grading. For correction, the goal is to perfect exposure, color, etc so that it looks like it did on set. The grading phase is where you get artistic and stylize it. Here's the basic process I go through for most drone or stills camera footage. I start by getting my exposure, black point (the darkest color in the shot) and white point (the brightest color) all roughly where they need to be. Levels or curves work well for this. After that, I'll correct white balance and tint, then use 3-way color wheels to get everything looking natural. For grading, I'll make a separate set of nodes (not sure if Final Cut has a similar function, but basically another copy of all the color correction tools) and do the creative stuff, playing with the colors to give it the final style. This will vary depending on your preference, or you might choose to use a LUT at this point.
