Hey guys, so I just came back from a small video collaboration where a friend of mine was using the s-log settings on his Sony A7III, and now checking out the videos in post-production, they do look different and I can tweak much more details than on the footage shot by my M50.
I know both cameras are quite incomparable because of the obvious price difference, dynamic range and depth of color, one being low entry level cam the other being professional, but how do I get the most out of my M50?
Below you can find a menu of all the settings that can be readjusted, and I'd appreciate it greatly if you could suggest how to set them to take in more detail (ISO, apeture, SS and WB are skipped)

High ISO speed NR: OFF - Low - Standard - High

Don’t waste your time. The M50 is incapable of log footage and you’ll just be introducing artifacting to your footage. To get the best out of an M50 (I own one) work on better lighting & exposure externally. If you want to use log get a log capable camera.

I use to own an M50 the best results I got was when I used a custom picture profile. Turned both the saturation and contrast all the way down. As far as the sharpness just put it to whatever you prefer and keep the color tone the way it is I find it to be pretty accurate when it's at it's default setting.

January 3, 2021 - There's no way to get log but that profile is the best for getting a bit of extra in the highs and lows. It can't stand up to c-log, not just due to it not being log, but also the codec. So you're not going to be able to grade much before you start seeing your gradients fall apart.

Faking C Log: Worth it?
You can load Technicolor's Cinestyle profile . I've put it on my 7Dmkii and I've found the footage quite good. Not quite as good as a Log profile but very usable. When I shoot video for work I use a Panasonic GH4 with VLog. I've found flat profiles very helpful for getting the detail and professional look I want. More on reddit.com

Clog is not going to do well on the M 50. Since that was about the best picture profile for the camera within the capabilities. If you’re going to go Clog get a better camera. More on reddit.com

Might as well add it, you can switch picture profiles easily. My general mindset is with 8 bit cameras its best to shoot close to the final result you want and minimize tweaking in post, but test the workflows and see what works best for the look you want. More on reddit.com

Hey all. Wondering what your experiences with trying to mimic C Log have been. I've been shooting photo and video with an 80d and I have been getting good results. Experimented with a more flat picture profile today and I'm not sure if it's worth the hype. What are your thoughts/experiences?

You can load Technicolor's Cinestyle profile . I've put it on my 7Dmkii and I've found the footage quite good. Not quite as good as a Log profile but very usable. I don't do a lot of video on my DSLR and my previous job I used a Sony video camera that didn't have a similar picture style or shooting mode, so keep that in mind with my response. However, my understanding is that shooting in C log or other flat picture styles isn't for the look but more for the ability to do more when giving the footage the color treatment in post. You have more control over contrast, details in shadows/highlights, etc. You can load an unofficial "c log" picture style on your canon as well as Cinestyle by Technicolor to accomplish this. It's worth exploring if you plan to spend the time in post color correcting. But if you want to shoot it and share it (so to speak), it might not be for you.

I’m going to shoot something soon with my Mark II and was curious on whether or not I’d waste my time and money investing in EOSHD C-Log or C-Log 1-3 in general. I’m a bit new to the color grading process and such and I have shot and graded with Cinestyle previously but was wondering if any of you know is it worth it at all to buy either of them? This is the biggest project I’ve done to date and want to make it look cinematic, but I also don’t want to buy either of the picture profiles, then have it turn out that they should really only be used for better Canon cameras, if anyone has thoughts on this, I would greatly appreciate some feedback!

Hello. I purchased the EOS HD C LOG profile for my canon m50. I haven’t yet installed it but wondered if anyone else has (because the m50 doesn’t have the option to film in clog). This is a profile that isn’t for the official canon website so i’ve been in two minds on whether to install it.
If anyone has had any success with it i would love to know as i want to color grade my videos.

If it’s this one linked below, all it seems to be is a custom picture style profile that lowers contrast. It won’t make your video 10 bit, so you won’t have the latitude for color grading that real Clogs would, but since it’ll still output at 4:2:0 it’ll be easier on your hardware to edit. If your M50 allows you to customize picture styles though, spending money on these things was entirely unnecessary. https://www.eoshd.com/store/eoshd-c-log1/
