Step 1: Determine the base for the table. A distinct log table is utilized for each of the bases. The preceding table is for base 10. As a result, only the log value of a number to the base 10 may be found.

4 Ways to Use Logarithmic Tables - wikiHow
June 1, 2024 - Identify the characteristic of the number whose log you want to find. Let's say you want to find the base-10 log of 15 on a common log table. 15 lies between 10 (101) and 100 (102), so its logarithm will lie between 1 and 2, or be 1.something. 150 lies between 100 (102) and 1000 (103), so its logarithm will lie between 2 and 3, or be 2.something.

Logarithm - Wikipedia
5 days ago - The abbreviation log x is often used when the intended base can be inferred based on the context or discipline, or when the base is indeterminate or immaterial. Common logarithms (base 10), historically used in logarithm tables and slide rules, are a basic tool for measurement and computation in many areas of science and engineering; in these contexts log x still often means the base ten logarithm.

Before the invention of calculators, the only alternative to slide rules was to use tables of logarithms. These were published to varying degrees of accuracy · The first example shows a page of logarithms to 4 figure accuracy and the second to 7 figure accuracy

The Log Table is archetypal, its clean lines and refined silhouette contrived by designer Julien Renault, whose intention was to make a quintessential table for work or play. Its streamlined design cleverly conceals its engineering: a veneer-covered honeycomb core keeps the tabletop light, allowing it to span a great distance. Purposefully robust legs anchor the table and give it stability, and their simple screw connections make assembly straightforward. The ever-so-pleasing curved edge and rounded lines of the legs gently soften the overall effect.

Using Log Tables for Quick Calculations: A Practical Approach
A logarithm table is a mathematical reference used to determine the logarithm of a number with respect to a specific base. Separate log tables exist for different bases such as 10, e (Euler’s number), and 2.

A Recipe for a Common Logarithm Table - Cedron Dawg
April 29, 2017 - Cedron Dawg shows how to construct a base-10 logarithm table from scratch using only pencil-and-paper math. The recipe combines simple series for e and ln(1+x) with clever factoring and neighbor-based recurrences so minimal square-root work is required. Along the way the post explains a practical algorithm, high-accuracy interpolation and inverse-log reconstruction so you can reproduce published log tables by hand.

r/askmath on Reddit: How did people compute logarithm tables back in the day? How could I (in principle) compute one now?
May 8, 2024 -

I’ve been wondering lately, how were accurate logarithm tables computed in the first place? I can see how you could interpolate integer versions, but it’s a bit of a mystery to me how you could really improve the accuracy of these… maybe there are some tricks that could be done with least common multiples? Perhaps analog computing or the CORDIC method were instrumental in this?
