Any good books on formal/informal logical fallacies?

Thou shalt not commit logical fallacies [PDF]
Handle with caution! In some of these cases, how the argument is presented matters a lot, and they should not automatically be dismissed as fallacies. Take the commonly misunderstood "appeal to authority." We don't all have the time, expertise, or facilities to run complex experiments in physics or neuroscience, so in most contexts, it's perfectly good form to cite an authoritative textbook or study on the subject. If you want to make an argument about schizophrenia or addiction, it would often be considered bad form if you didn't cite the DSM. The real fallacy of appeal to authority is when you cite a source as an authority and that source is not actually an authority on the subject in question. For example, if you cited Stephen Hawking to make a case about dietary nutrition or the Dalai Lama on physics, that would be a fallacious appeal to authority. Slippery slope is another questionable one. In politics, we often have incremental change, and to get from point A to point C, we have to pass through point B. So if your interest is to avoid getting to point C, it often makes sense to try to stop things from getting to point B. Nobody would argue that we could have gone straight to the Civil Rights act without first ending slavery. Now this is, of course, a good slippery slope to be on, but it's real. Likewise, if someone argues that legalizing medical marijuana is a slippery slope to legalizing recreational marijuana, they're probably right (in the long run). It doesn't make sense to counter with a charge of a slippery slope fallacy - it's better to argue that this state of affairs would be a substantial improvement on catastrophic failure of the "drug war." A cool guide: The Periodic Table Of Logical Fallacies. All words and pictures by me. Please feel free to copy, share, print it, ignore it (if you don't like it).
I really like this. However your definition of "no true scotsman" is not quite correct. Imagine someone says, "All Scotsmen enjoy haggis." When told about a Scotsman who dislikes haggis, they respond, "Well, no true Scotsman would dislike haggis!" It's a way of dismissing exceptions to a stereotype. More on reddit.com
