Please ELI5: why do property taxes go up after a sale of a house in Los Angeles? Can it be avoided or changed?
Bc there is a new appraisal on the house determining the value of the house. Also look up prop 13. This rewards long time home owners. No matter the household income. So when someone sells from there the taxes will go up. It limits how much a property tax can up every year while you own the home. More on reddit.com

NYC vs. Los Angeles ?
I’ve lived without a car in both NYC and LA and can definitively say if you don’t have a car, living in NYC will make your experience much, much easier. You’ll pay more in rent out there, but most everything else will be as cheap if not cheaper than LA. But buses and the metro are not great for getting around here. You’ll likely need roommates wherever you are. In NYC you’ll need to look outside Manhattan. But you can get to the city easier still as long as you’re close to a subway line. More on reddit.com
