Lossless compression - Wikipedia
3 weeks ago - For example, it is used in the ZIP file format and in the GNU tool gzip. It is also often used as a component within lossy data compression technologies (e.g. lossless mid/side joint stereo preprocessing by MP3 encoders and other lossy audio encoders).

Lossless compression allows for a full true decompression with, as the name implies, no loss of data. Lossy compression is more compact but sacrifices some of the data when compressing so the decompression isn't an exact copy of what you started with, but it's "close enough" Which one you choose to use depends on how accurate the data needs to be at the end. ETA: lossy compression also makes files smaller than lossless compression so that's also a consideration when choosing an appropriate compression scheme.

Lossless compression like FLAC or ALAC compress the data, but in such a way that no information is lost. Like a ZIP file. You can still get perfect reconstruction of the original data from the compressed version. PNG is a compressed, but lossless image format. Formats like WAV and AIFF are lossless, but also uncompressed. This means your file sizes are much larger than MP3 or even FLAC. TIFF is an uncompressed image format. MP3 or AAC are compressed and lossy. Which means you do lose some data during compression, but you get much smaller file sizes. JPEG is lossy image compression. Data stored on CDs is typically uncompressed AIFF, so most CD rippers will let you convert to FLAC, so that you don't lose any data, but the file sizes are smaller than AIFF. If you want to save even more space, then most people recommend 320MP3, which is the least lossy version of MP3, but it is still chucks some information.

What is the most 'efficient', relativley lossless digital file format?
44100hz 16 bit flac would be most efficient, and even here its mostly considered "enough". Its Cd quality so you can find a ton of material in this quality without upscaling. More on reddit.com

If you can’t tell the difference between lossless & lossy maybe it’s just your ears idk
Watch this instead: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLFS7T3MmGc TLDW: Analyses the "320kbps" encoded files from the NPR test (which is an ad for Tidal btw) and finds that they are so badly encoded that they're equivalent to 192kbps, which is why it's possible to tell the difference. At 320kbps, nobody call tell the difference in a properly designed blind test, outside of pathological cases where the encoder doesn't work correctly, or deliberately flawed tests like this one. There is no meaningful, discernible difference between 320kbps MP3s and lossless audio
For pure listening purposes, that is very probably true, but it does make sense to have the best source material possible before it goes through the wringer of time stretching, eq, summing, effects, limiting, possibly several digital to analog conversions, etc... All this may magnify the imperfections of a lossy file. Also, people may not hear it consciously but they may feel it. In the end, nothing wrong with playing a 320, but if you can get your hand on lossless, I suggest doing so. More on reddit.com

What Is Lossless Audio?
Unlike lossy compression, which discards portions of the data to reduce the file size, lossless audio preserves the complete waveform, a critical distinction for professionals seeking high fidelity, accuracy, and post-production flexibility.

How does lossless audio compression work? – Addicted To Audio
July 7, 2021 - A year after the appearance of the DVD-Audio format, xiph.org – the developer of the freeware (and better than MP3) lossy format Ogg Vorbis – released FLAC, the Free Lossless Audio Codec. This is likely the most widely used lossless audio compression system around, and it now seems to be supported by just about every major computing and digital audio platform.

April 11, 2025 - Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC): Similar to FLAC, but this format is optimal for Apple devices. Huffman Coding: A fundamental algorithm that finds the most efficient way to represent data by encoding it using fewer bits for common elements and more bits for less common elements. Lossy compression techniques selectively remove audio data that’s thought to be less critical to human perception.
