I like the “low-key” luxury: ultra-quality brands without flashy logos. Loro Piana for clothes, Carl Friedrik for minimalist luggage and bags, Mr Porter for shoes. Do you have any other brands in this vein?

Say you want to buy a mid-size SUV. Price is not a factor. You can afford a German luxury car or premium brand, but don't want a flashy badge (so no BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Lexus, Buick, Lincoln, Acura, Volvo, etc). You do want the fully-optioned interior to be as nice as possible... comfy, nice tech and features, decent driving.
What do you buy? Mazda seems to be the favorite on this sub, so CX5/CX9? Something else?
I'm starting a new job that will have me in circles of ultra wealthy, so I need to up my wardrobe. It obviously can't say I'm trying hard, but it needs to be clothes that these people would recognize. These are old money people, so it also can't have that "try hard" look. To paint a picture, these are the types of settings I'd be in:
- Closing a large investment on a yacht.
- Party in Miami at someone's house that's worth $20 billion.
- Evening drinks at a cocktail lounge in NYC.
You get the picture. Any brands I should be looking at?
Thanks!
Any recommendations? Who has potential to grow and be the LV or Chanel of the future?
I'm looking for quiet/lowkey type brands that look luxury but are really affordable, no logos, and preferably unique and not like major. Thanks!
Edit: Streetwear and minimalism btw
Edit 2: Old money?
Would love to know what luxury brands are your favourite and have maintained quality over the years. I’ve always loved my YSL and Fendi’s for quality and recently branched out to LV but have been absolutely put off by the amount of flaws/ poor materials /poorly made products I have been receiving (I’m not talking about Vintage, I know that LV use to have very good standards previously) Was hoping people can share which brands people have good experiences with that I can look into? I’ve heard Loewe and Bottega have excellent leather but haven’t had any experience with these brands myself yet.
I’m also open to hearing about less known brands, as I understand that they can have excellent quality leather also before they get bought up by a big conglomerates where they inflate costs but quality decreases.
I recently moved to Germany and have been discovering a bunch of luxury European brands I have never heard of before.
For example, I've discovered Strenesse (German brand), Daniel Hechter (German), Hunkydory (Swedish) and Lilith (French). I've been really impressed with the quality of these items. They use excellent fabrics, like lots of cashmere, or merino or virgin wool blends.
These brands are very expensive in store (for example a Strenesse blazer is around 500 Euros). But what I love about these companies is they are completely affordable on eBay! They offer the same quality as luxury brands but since they are not a "known" luxury brand, the items I've seen on eBay have not been very expensive.
What are some "unknown" luxury brands that you enjoy?
I want a high end bag, top quallity, but no logos and not super identifiable to the average person right away. Small, black, leather, Chanel quality or higher. What do you suggest?
Looking for suggestions! I love hearing about new labels. Thanks!
Edit: wow thank you for all the feedback! What a fun journey through all the labels.
Edit 2: thanks for the awards y’all! ❤️
Ok so I was watching LIB (oh should we do bwt-approved guilty pleasure binge shows?? i digress!) and it was so resonant to me when one of the guys said they could tell that his castmate had wealth even though they never spoke of money, simply from peeping the sweaters he wore. Reminded me I’ve been wanting to ask this for an updated grown woman list!
Does anyone remember as a thrifty teen the first time they glided their fingers across a blazer from The Row or spotted a James Perse tee in (gasp) TJ Maxx of all places and realized just like new money and old money…when it comes to basics bitch: there are levelssss to this!
I even remember being surprised as a fashion graduate (btw Christian Siriano was my class mate for fun facts!) what rayon blends, silk cotton blends, and bamboo blends felt like the first time in store after construction and not just as an industrial textile roll. I remember it more than my first ya know wink wink experience. That’s how impactful it was!
So I come to you desperate: what are your absolute favorite will-go-down-with-a-fight-over-your-convictions that THIS brand makes the best designed basics. Hidden gem and local indie designers more than welcomed.
I tend to prioritize…
the seams
fabrication
and pile-free
tactile nature
Don’t mind if they require dry cleaning.
Hermes Chanel Christian dior Gucci Celine Bulgari Delvaux LV Jacquemus Prada Miu miu Goyard YSL
Curious about this because I've noticed some people completely dismiss certain luxury brands that others completely love. What's your opinion? What put you off certain brands?
Please list some of your favorite “quiet luxury” clothing brands in the USA, for women over 30.
Over the years, I’ve definitely come to appreciate the quality and details that higher prices can offer. Still, there are some brands that I see in luxury stores that would never strike me as high-end if I saw them off-the-rack.
The first one that comes to mind is MZ Wallace. To me, they look like a cross between quilted bags that were popular 10 years ago and puffer jackets, but then put into the wash so the quilting pulls and the stuffing moves around. I don’t understand the appeal.
I’ll also admit that I didn’t realize that Missoni was a luxury brand for way too long. To me, their busy stripes on knits tend to look very unflattering when draped on a body instead of a hanger.
Which brands fall into this category for you?
Edit: I’ve removed a comment about personal preference for Missoni, as it distracted from my intent about this thread (perceived quality and return on investment) and devolved into a lot of discussion about taste and what they think makes other people look cheap, which is not the kind of inclusive framing any conversation about fashion should have. Let people like what they like, have fun with fashion, don’t use someone’s clothing choices as a means to put them down.
I kind of hate this question because it inevitably turns into a list of things that old money rich people have deemed "trashy" because they're now worn by middle-class white people and POC. Like once someone outside of the established east coast "cool girl" crew can afford something, it's suddenly low-class. It sucks that someone (like the folks I grew up with in Arkansas) who saved up to buy a nice Coach wristlet or something is branded as tacky, when to them, affording a luxury item is very exciting. 90% of what we wear is a status symbol in some way -- just because something has branding on it doesn't mean it's bad design.
My aunt bought me aforementioned Coach wristlet as a thank-you because my family helped her out a lot when she had cancer. It cost her a lot and was a big purchase for her. I'm trying to re-wire my brain to not feel weird every time I take it out because people in my city think it screams "sorority girl" or "trashy." I want to be proud of her, and the gift she gave me, so I'm trying to use it every day.
edit: Y’all are so kind. I didn’t think this would resonate with so many people. I’m a freelance writer and I’d like to turn this into a longer blog post or pitch, so I’ll share here if I ever have the time to write it.
Anything with oversized, unnecessary branding on it. First one that comes to mind is Michael Kors (may not be high end for some people but it is for me 🤷🏻♀️)
