r/GardeningUK on Reddit: Evergreen plants for a narrow border in full sun in summer & partial shade rest of year
August 1, 2025 -

I have a narrow border 2 m by .7 . I currently have a rose a clematis and a couple of geraniums growing. I’m new to gardening and tried planting perennials this spring. Most have died and all I have left is a very bare border. What small evergreens with a bit of height would help keep the border looking full throughout the year while leaving space for things like echinacea verbena foxgloves and salvia. Thanks

Low-maintenance, evergreens for pots?
Plants in pots will always be vulnerable to hunger, cold, being too wet and drought. The root systems will also be constrained so they'll never reach their full potential. Also, the best plants for pollinators in general terms are native plants as evolution has designed our flora and fauna to synchronise to be beneficial to both. One of the best plants for a pot is Buxus sempervirens but it's not going to provide you with a floral display. You could try English lavender, either Lavandula hidcote or munstead. They're great for insects and they look magnificent in flower. They're semi evergreen only though. Miniature roses, patio roses, also look spectacular in flower. Very little maintenance involved, apart from an annual trim and lots of watering but you're going to have that with anything. There are lots of herbaceous plants, geranium spp, etc, that'll give you flowers but you're looking for evergreen. More on reddit.com
