I am in Zone 5b, am by no means an expert but appear to have a green thumb, and focus on edibles. I have a 22’ fruit wall in full sun, and a 65’ fruit and veggie wall in mostly sun. For perennials I have asparagus, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, grapes, blueberries, goji berries, currants, walking Egyptian onions, all kinds of herbs, and various fruit trees. We have all kinds of lilies, echinacea, daisies, marigolds, and other flowers to attract pollinators or become sacrificial plants. Balancing the function and aesthetic value has been the biggest challenge but I feel like this was a great year to grow in and not be too chaotic. I also found Canary melons grow amazingly well where I am in Eastern Canada. Good luck Answer from Deleted User on reddit.com

Low maintenance perennials
I would honestly go check out Gerten’s. They have a great native perennial section. I have added several native beds in my yard, and I have gotten a ton of my ideas from there (and some plants). Keep an eye on Facebook Marketplace. There are a ton of people around the metro that split their native plants in the spring and sell them or offer them up for free. I have gotten quite a few plants that way. I love Yarrow, Coneflower, Milkweed / Butterfly Weed, Aster, Butterfly Bush, Tickseed, Blazing Star, Lupine. I try to go for plants that are known to attract bees and monarchs. Monarchs LOVE blazing star. A lot of these plants will spread as well, so your space will fill more and more each year. I am not sure if they are all native, but I also like sedum for ground cover. There are a ton of different kinds. It is very resilient. I personally love them when they are green, but they do flower. I have them around my garden areas too. Have fun!!! More on reddit.com

r/gardening on Reddit: Zone 5b perennials?
August 14, 2023 -

Ok. So my experience gardening is pretty much limited to being child labor for my horticulturalist mother. Now I live in zone 5b, I'm interested in replanting a fairly easily-maintained garden. The one I have ... let's just say, the previous owners just threw things in willy nilly. I have orange daylillies coming out of my ears, full sun plants in full shade, untrimmed dogwood and lilac, a weed-infested compost pile, etc. A good opportunity for someone who can organize a garden. Except I only know enough to be slightly competent.

I'm looking for help in perennial decorative, perennial low ground covers, and perennial edibles suitable to the zone. In most of the yard I usually only have partial to almost full sun ... until I drop a few trees, sunlight will be an issue. I also have a full shade area about 40' × 8'.

April 25, 2025 - Columbine does well with full and partial sun exposure, average watering, and little maintenance. It grows twenty-four to thirty inches high and eighteen to twenty-four inches wide. For the best results, plant it in rich, moist soil with partial shade, and don’t let the soil get too dry. Butterflies and hummingbirds love columbine, and it can withstand deer and rabbits. Columbine can have issues with leaf miners but rarely gets diseases. It flowers from late spring until early summer. These perennials come in several different unique colors to choose form.

Shade Gardening:vigorous, low maintenance perennials that spread
May 10, 2008 - I grew it from seed in both blue and white and it spreads nicely. It looks like a fern when not in bloom, and you get many months from it. And I agree about virginia bluebells, although they go dormant and disappear (had to have them anyway!) I am in zone 5a, and I have had each of these plants for at least five years.

November 3, 2006 - I have it here in northern NY state and it grows over the top of a 12 foot arbor. It will grow to the top and all along your fence. Canadian developed and there are others just as hardy. It requires absolutely NO CARE with thousands of blooms. I got 2 of them at 2 feet tall and the 3rd spring they reached the 12 foot top. Hardy to zone 2.

Every Garden Needs a Few Low-Maintenance Perennial Plants
July 9, 2025 - One thing to keep in mind: Perennials can be slow to take off. They usually start to kick into high gear by the third year in the ground, but if you’re worried about a spot looking patchy, you’ll want to plant enough that they don’t have to spread over-far to fill in a spot. You’ll also want to make sure you read the plant tags and descriptions. Choose plants that will survive winters in your USDA Hardiness Zone.
