Suggestions for low maintenance shady yard - Maryland
There are so many beautiful flowering shrubs that will grow in shade in Maryland, most of which are very hardy: azaleas, hydrangeas, rhododendrons, mountain laurel, winter berry…. That’s what I would do. They’ll need watering when they first go in the ground, and then they’re very low maintenance after that. More on reddit.com

Low maintenance plants that grow in shade
Most of the shade lovers die back entirely in winter. Ferns, bluebells (native), wild garlic..woodland plants basically. Astilbe..over 18 varieties and lots of purple. Some used in traditional medicine. Hostas like the shade. Japanese Anemones. I think Fatsia Japonica Variegata prefers shade and is evergreen. Yew is another evergreen. Anything that likes the dark is slightly gothic! More on reddit.com

Shade tolerant, low maintenance plants for against a house?
Royal Carpet Alyssum. Its a short ground cover flower that pollinators love, since they stay low to the ground their roots don’t even go deep in the ground and couldn’t possibly harm your house. Or if you just wanted something simple, get some moss to cover it. I love the look of a moss bed too! More on reddit.com

10 Fantastic Low-Maintenance Plants for Shade | Plant Addicts
July 12, 2019 - Some bear showy white trumpets and others flower in shades of lavender and blue, and many are fragrant. All are loved by pollinators. Watch their colors change in fall, then clip the foliage off when it gets killed by frost. Hostas thrive in rich moisture-retentive soils and are hardy in USDA Zones 3-9. Nothing lends a refreshing woodland feel to a garden like ferns and they are very low-maintenance—just cut any dead foliage back to the crown in spring or fall.

March 13, 2025 - Next on our list of shrubs for shade is Daphne. Most varieties have evergreen leaves and produce pink or white fragrant blooms in late winter or early spring. In my garden, it’s one of the plants that lets me know spring is coming. When I open the front door and can smell the Daphne’s perfume (even before I see the flowers), I know winter is almost over! It can be a little tricky to get started, but once it is established, Daphne is a very low maintenance plant.

r/NativePlantGardening on Reddit: Suggestions for low maintenance shady yard - Maryland
April 22, 2024 -

Hi all! My in-laws have a weird backyard - 2/3 is mostly shaded and the other 1/3 is full sun in central MD. The yard was a total mess when they bought the house and they've done various work to clean it up, but im now on a "save the yard" mission as they're thinking about just paving over most/much of it to "reduce maintenance" 😱 Any suggestions for a mix of native groundcovers that might work in this space with so much shade and mediocre soil? They're in their 60s/70s so really looking for things that are as minimal maintenance as possible. I can help get things goings and provide more support in the beginning, but once new plants are settled in, I'd hope to have something for them that they can mostly ignore. FWIW they also have a ton of those big ants that bite so bonus points to any suggestions that might deter insects. Thanks in advance!
