Hi, i have a nuphy air 75 with gateron brown switches but they feel almost like a linear. I am looking for a low profile clicky switches compatible with this keyboard.

Any recommendation would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi, after some time gathering informations I'm nearly ready to build my first split keyboard, however I'm stuck in choosing the switches.

Some informations: I'm based in Europe (Italy), after some researches I plan to buy a kit for a Lily58 (on 42keebs.eu). It's my first custom keyboard, up to now I always only used my integrated laptop keyboard. Despite of that, I'm quite into DIY stuff and I can solder.

My main priorities are : affordable price, low profile and silence. The latter is particularly important since the people in my office (And me as well) are pretty quick-tempered about noises.

I read a lot about MX and choc switches, which I assume to be the standard form factors, and It appears that the MX are the gold standard, cheaper and more easily available. However the chocs have a smaller size, so I assume they also have a smaller profile, right? Is there a particular type of switches you would suggest?

Concerning the feeling of the switch I read about linear, tactile and clicky. I never tried any of those, so assuming the latter inappropiate to my needs, maybe since it's my first keyboard I might just one of the first two randomly. Do you have any suggestions about that?

Sorry about the ignorance but I feels quite lost about the difference between all these switches.

So there are three versions of Choc switches (from my understanding), with the V1 being the most common. There is also the Choc V2 and Choc Mini, but I don't see as much praise for these switches. Choc V1 is typically what you'll see with these kits that offer them. Linear, tactile and clicky switches are something you'll have to try to know what you like. I personally prefer linears, but that's because I like how effortless light switches feel. Spring swapping can be done with clicky and tactile options, but too extreme of a swap can cause issues. I prefer Choc to MX because of the shorter travel distance and tighter standard spacing, but both are fine. You'll have a lot more keycap options with switches that use MX stems, so that's something to consider. MX switches have 4mm of travel, Choc V1 has 3mm. I'm not an MX switch enthusiast so I'm not really sure what to suggest there, but for Choc V1, either Silvers or Sunsets would be pretty safe options. I use Pinks, but these could feel overwhelmingly light if you have a heavy hand. Sunsets felt amazing, but a little too heavy for my liking. As for silence, there are some slightly finicky mods that you can make to these switches, but there are some silent Choc linears being released in the early months next year, with silent tactiles coming after. They're predicted for March but that isn't set in stone from my knowledge. Edit: There are other options like the Gateron KS-33 but I've never tried these, and I don't know if they require their own footprint, so they may not be a drop-in replacement. Some of the stuff by NuPhy look solid on paper.

If you want a truly silent keyboard, the MX way is the easiest one. There are three primary sources of noise: When the stem hits the bottom. When the keycap hits the top. When the stem hits the top on release. There is also some metal ringing from the contacts and the spring, but this ringing is usually negligible. For eliminating noise, we need a particular switch: damped at the bottom and dumped at the top, with the stem long enough to prevent the keycap from hitting the top. Some examples: https://www.kailh.net/products/kailh-deep-sea-silent-pro-box-switch-set https://www.gateron.co/products/gateron-silent-switch-set Scroll the pages to look at their construction. I have a similar set of Outemu silent switches. I hate their guts, but they are as silent as it gets. You can also make a "semi-silent" switch out of almost any switch with o-rings. They dump the keystroke noise, but they do not dump the release noise. The latter is way less loud, though. With any kind of low-profile switches, you have to dump them yourself. It is doable and there are even some manuals and videos on the subject.

Because of the thin small casing, are they quieter and more okay for work environments? Because low profile switches are shorter actuation and lighter springs, are tactile/clicky bumps less tiring and noticeable?

I am starting with Red Pros (35g linear) on my low profile board, coming from Gateron Speed Silvers on Ergodox after only using MX Browns for years, but hearing low profile boards with clicky switches now has me interested. Also when typing trainers have typewriter sounds I do find it satisfying. I got tired of the amount of force needed in tactile but liked the shorter bottoming out and low effort of speed silvers, but with the low force needed for low profile Im thinking of trying clicky idk.

Background first, skip to bottom if you just want to see the keyboards I’m considering. I’m looking for any insight separating the contenders I’ve narrowed it down to.

After doing some research on mechanical keyboards for coding and gaming, I decided to take the plunge. I did some research and made my best guess on what I wanted, but when I got the keyboard I chose I was thrown by the full profile keys - I have been coding on low profile scissor switches for years, and have gotten very used to them. The full profile keys felt clunky, like my fingers were having trouble navigating around to where they wanted to go without hitting other keys. It slowed me down and felt awkward.

Additionally, the cherry browns I chose were solid, but I realized I wanted something clickier. I had initially shied away from the blues after reading complaints about noise and excessive clickiness.

Still running the current keyboard through its paces to see if it grows on me but I’m coming around to the fact that I may want to try something else that provides a feel closer to what I’m used to using, but with the mechanical keyboard experience - something low profile and clicky.

My requirements: low profile, clicky switches, full size 100+ keys. Bluetooth would be nice to have but is not necessary.

Almost all low profile keyboards I found were linear switches, but after some digging the contenders I found are:

Kailh choc white switches:

  • Logitech G815 and G915

  • Hexgears Venture

  • Havit KB395L

Gateron low profile blue:

  • Keychron K1

If you have insight or personal experience with any of these keyboards I’d love to hear your experience. And if I missed any keyboards that fit my criteria, please also let me know.

Thanks

r/ErgoMechKeyboards on Reddit: Quiet clicky Switches? Just want clicky style tactility

I love the feeling of clicky switches. Feels very sensory, like I'm popping something every time I click. The path is straight down with resistance to activate and "break through". And gives a tactile type writer feeling. I hate the loudness of clicky switches.

I (personally) hate the feeling of tactile switches. the path isn't straight down. I can feel my fingers steering off a straight path and going "around" the bump. I've tried small and big, and some of the most expensive and 'holy grail'. I just received boba 4ts and was disappointed. Tactile have a great sound.

Can I make clicky quiet, or any that have clicky style tactility that arent super loud? Currently using Kailh, love how it feels but not sounds.

Yes, I have been reading the wiki but it seems a "little" outdated on this topic.

I have bought a SK630 and want to switch the switches (rolf) for a clicky one, but I can't find a lot of information about these. AFAIK Kailh have at least one type of this kind, but I don't know about other copanies.

Any advice on this? Thank you in advance.

What are the best silent tactile or silent clicky switches?

I currently only know about the Kailh Box Silent Browns when it comes to silent tactile switches, but if they're really that good, I'll go with them.

I want it to be just quiet enough so that the room next to me can’t hear me typing.

Also, if there is a better subreddit or forum to ask this question in, please let me know. Still interested in hearing your guys' thoughts though.

Edit: I prefer some pre-travel before the tactile bump, that’s why I personally don’t like the Boba U4Ts or the Glorious Pandas that much.

r/MechanicalKeyboards on Reddit: Clicky Switch Enthusiasts Get In Here - Outemu Blue Switches - The GOLD standard in clicky!

I had been hunting for the ultimate low profile switch for my build. Tried the Kailh Whites and Robins. They were good with their clickbars and I was going to go with them; but I ended up going with an ergo keyboard that only used Outemu Switches. At first I thought they were going to be a worst feeling but servicable either way. Then I found the above youtube short explaining how you can easily modify them from one of the worst click experiences I had ever experienced, to literally top tier gold standard in my opinion in terms of utter clicky excellence. This switch has quite the unique click experience. It doesn't have a click bar, but actually a metal U shape that honestly reminds me of a beam spring type design.

Basically you get this super crisp break that is hella light. Now these are cheap and so are the keyboards that use them. I had to destroy the red linear switches in the keyboard just to get them out. Also, doing the hack doesn't guarantee you will get the same great click in all of them, so order more than you need. Plus, if you need to switch out a switch cause ends up not being as clicky as expected you might have to destroy it to get it out.

But the click, it is so much more satisfying then the whites or robins. Like when you lift up off there is this subtle tab of the keycap. Kinda like a super slight delay kiss off your finger tip that is utterly satisfying. Its not a super fast typer at all, but I don't mind the decreased speed for the dramatically enhanced experienced. Its just not mentioned how insanely unique these switches are with this modification.

Hi All, I want to change the switches on my M16+ that I've recently purchased.

Ideally, the buttons would sound like the buttons on a HORI Fighting Commander controller. (Or at least as close as possible to it.)

I've looked around their discord and some different webpages but most of the info is vague or redundant.

Thank you for any suggestions!!
