The Best Patio Plants for Florida
December 19, 2024 - They make an excellent choice for low maintenance deck plants. As long as they are planted at the right time of year, after the frost has finished but before temperatures get too hot in the summer, cherry tomatoes make excellent outdoor patio plants. These edible plants are easy to grow and, once they are established, you'll be able to enjoy the delicious fruits throughout Florida's hot summer.

March 25, 2023 -

I'll be completely honest, I have no experience on taking care of plants and while I was hanging out at our backyard it seems so empty and it's lacking something. I've also been depressed lately so maybe start learning about plants will be therapeutic.

I live in Central FL. I just have no idea how to start. Any kind of advises or suggestions are greatly appreciated, thank you so much!

15 Container Garden Plants That Breeze Through Summer's Heat
March 6, 2025 - Make sure that it is large enough to give the plant sufficient room to grow and keep it from tipping over on windy days. If the container is too small, the soil will also dry up quickly, requiring you to water more frequently.

Low-maintenance native plants for Florida landscapes?
I’ve found that most native plants are low maintenance. Water every day for the first two weeks after planting then every two days for another couple weeks. If you plant in summer, you don’t have to water too much because of the rain. Check out the Florida Native Plant Society page - there is good information about plants that are native to your particular county too https://www.fnps.org/plants Edit: Right plant, right place is a good rule of thumb. Plant the right plant for the right location ie sun-loving dry soil plant in the area with little irritation or low lying with a lot of sun etc More on reddit.com

Beginner here 😊 Besides succulents, I need help on what colorful plants (flowers) to place by the outdoor deck.
Pentas, vinca, hibiscus, gardenia, lantana, blanket flowers, salvias, beach sunflower all do well in containers! There’s probably a lot more, those are just the ones I’ve had success with. As you do your research, keep in mind the amount of sun and water needed for different plants varies. So choose the ones that will be best for your growing conditions. Gardening is a great pick me up I hope you feel better soon ❤️ More on reddit.com

Good low-maintenance balcony plants?
Former Tally resident. I killed a lot of plants on my west facing porch. Large leaves are going to be a challenge, those that will tolerate sun really prefer to be in the ground. Don't bother thinking about edibles until late August. You'll get lots of recs, but here's what worked for me to have a pretty, lower (not low) maintenance porch: BIG planters. Box style or round pots no less than 20" dia. A lot of pots together look junky unless they're cohesive. So go big and plan for multiples in the larger planters. Water crystals are a game changer. Keep them off of the topmost layers of soil. Follow the container strategy of "thriller, filler, spiller" when choosing plants. Low maintenance but looks good: ponytail palm, flapjacks, snake plant, succulents, bulbine. Higher maintenance for summer, but still "easy": sun tolerant (!) coleus, pentas, vinca, purslane. October - March: flowering time! Pansies, petunias, begonias, million bells, many options. I grew baby lettuce in low self watering planters, lots of veggie options that time of year. Head to Esposito's or Tally Nursery for good quality plants and good advice. Just Fruits & Exotics is further afield but should have a great selection of edibles and natives. Good luck and pls share your results! More on reddit.com

I’ve been landscaping in Central Florida for a while now, and I'm trying to incorporate more native plants to reduce maintenance and water use. I know some classics like Saw Palmetto and Coontie, but I'm looking for more ideas.

Any favorites that hold up well in the heat and don’t need constant watering?
