So when looking at memory foam toppers the best metric to measure quality will be the density. Not to be confused with firmness, for memory foam its density and firmness are not necessarily related. You will want to consider the feedback on firmness to try to match your own personal needs. This can be difficult because there are all sorts of body types and preferences out there, so for every topper that exists there will be people saying its too firm, and people saying its too soft. Generally speaking the heavier you are the firmer you need, as you will bottom through a topper that is too soft and it will actually provide insufficient pressure relief. Some vendors will tell you the firmness, the vendors I like will tell you its ILD, which is a metric to measure the compression for comparison of firmness. But for most youre stuck sifting through reviews and trying to get a feel for how often people say its too soft, vs too firm, and making a judgement based on that. Not easy when no one is telling you their weight and sleep position. With all that blabbering out of the way. Youre already looking a 2 very popular affordable options. Both are around 2lb density memory foam which is on the low side. There are cheaper toppers made by companies like Linenspa, but they will be even worse quality than what you are looking at. One that offers a slightly better value is This Amazon Basics gel topper which is about 2.5lb density memory foam for $75. So mediocre quality for a good price, not a terrible deal. I bought the Lucid gel-infused, ventilated 2” mattress topper on Amazon. It has small holes all over it which is what provides the ventilation. Is this enough to not ruin the cooling features of my mattress?
I woke up yesterday with a very stiff neck and I suspect my firm mattress is to blame. I also purchased a cervical support memory foam pillow, so hopefully that helps.
Edit: I exchanged the 2” for the 3” Lucid topper. It’s awesome! It does get a little warm but not bad. The true test will be a heat wave. It’s so comfortable though. I do worry that it’s too plush to provide proper support but the mattress is just way too firm.

If you realize that the cooling features of your mattress are also a gimmick you can begin to make decisions that will head in a productive direction. There is no truly cooling mattress materials. The material might feel cool when you first lie on it. But it becomes a heat trap once it begins to take on your body heat. Maybe that’s fine if you’re in the bed alone and can roll and roll to a cool spot. But if you share and you’re stuck on your side the cooling properties are a complete waste.

My roommate and a friend have a cheap Amazon mattress + foam topper combo that I also found comfortable and would like to get. I am thinking of splurging on a nicer topper than they did; I am torn between the lucid 4” gel memory foam topper and the sleep on latex pure green natural latex 3” topper.
I was also looking at the saatva graphite mattress topper, so if it’s good I’d like to hear your thoughts.
I am a 5’11” 200lb side sleeper and have never chosen my own mattress before so I have analysis paralysis. I live in a very hot and humid climate so I’d like something that can keep me relatively cool. Any advice would be nice!

The gel memory foam is going to give a softer more sinking in feeling but may also make you sleep hot. The Latex will be a bit firmer feeling less sinking in but better with temperature regulation it will also last longer. Go lay on a memory foam mattress at a store then lay on a hybrid latex mattress see which you like better.

I’ve never tried either of those brands. But I can recommend mattress toppers from Sleep365. Their toppers are GOTS-certified organic, safe, and non-toxic. You can pick wool or latex, so you can get whichever works best for maintaining your body temperature. I live in a hot climate, so I have the latex one, and I love it. The outer cover is washable too, which is a big help for me since my dog likes to hang out on the bed, and occasionally, he’s messy.
