r/malefashionadvice on Reddit: Entry luxury/designer brand pieces
October 19, 2024 -

I haven’t bought any designer brand items before other than cologne and I’d like to buy a piece for the first time. I’ve been looking at brands such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci, YSL, Ted Baker, Chanel and others, all the basic designer brands pretty much. My current style basically consists of jeans and shirts/sweatshirts, which seems to be working, I just want to try upping my game a little. I’m just not really sure what to buy whether it be jewellery, belts, wallets, clothes or other stuff. I appreciate all advice whether it be general advice or specific pieces I should look into. Thank you.

Just my two cents, but if you’re currently into jeans and shirts/sweatshirts I would suggest looking into brands that provide long lasting, quality items that fit your current aesthetic. Looking into raw denim, brands like Naked & Famous offer entry level jeans in a variety of fits that are a cut above standard “jeans” on the market. They also make super high quality sweatshirts and hoodies. Other brands like RRL, Schott, Momotaro, and tons of other greats are regularly discussed over in the /rawdenim subreddit and could help up your basic wardrobe quite considerably while you look at more traditional designer goods. Totally up to you, but a fun route to explore!

i'm going to be honest, if you go into designer looking for durable materials and construction, you're going to be disappointed. and it's kinda a regarded take anyway because that's the whole rose anvil bs schtick. besides, you don't need a 2 iron full grain vegetable tanned leather nailed down into a double layer of soling leather. what, you're walking to mordor or something? when you buy designer pieces, it's less about "leveling up" and more about the design. it's in the name, designer. it's about interesting things that nobody else would make. the quality will be good enough for your daily use. will rick owens pirarucu leather jacket be the most durable, traditional artisan made jacket you'll have? no, but neither does making a wearable garment out of literal fishes . i bought a balenciaga bulldozer not because it's a durable boots, i bought it because it's a shin height boots with 3" platform sole that looks like tank threads. i bought rick owens vintage sneaks not because it's the best quality leather sneakers, i bought it because it looks like vans old skool that takes steroid on holiday bulking season. the quality is there, but it's not the main selling point. you need to have this in mind before going to designer pieces. and for interesting designs, which again is the main point of designer pieces, you need to go way beyond the entry level pieces. those are just self-contradictory items used to milk money for the brands, selling exclusivity without excluding anyone, inoffensive (which also means uninteresting) and really pointless in term of buying designers. you're not going to get the design language of demna gvasalia by buying a $500 balenciaga regular fit logo t shirt, you'd need to buy the $1300 upside down graphic t shirt. rick owens level tee is not going to show what rick vision is about (other than the extended back yoke panel), the dylan tank and unstable tee is what will represent rick owens design more. of course, ideally speaking you'd get the runway pieces. like the balenciaga steroid bomber or rick owens tatlin coat to get the full experience of the designer's vision.

February 17, 2023 -

I've always had this passion for fashion (I loved that rhymed) and have had some pretty interesting idea for luxury fashion clothes and would love to make this a business but sadly don't know where to start. What should be my first step? Is there any books you'd recommend?

Thank You Everyone!!!
