This has bugged me since I got my MacBook but have just managed to fix it by doing this:
"going to System Prefs, Keyboard & Mouse, Keyboard Shortcuts, Keyboard Navigation, and click on Move focus to next wondow (sic) in active application. There may be other shortcuts that you can restore there, too."

For those who have an international keyboard, the command might be assigned to a key combination that is not produced by the Cmd+` (i.e. the button to the left from key 1).
This even if the original key combination looks correct on the screen. To fix this go to System Preferences -> Keyboard and reassign the "Move focus to next window" to Cmd+`. This on Mojave. Took a while to figure out what was wrong.
I found that if you have multiple monitors, each would be a separate 'stage' when Stage Manager is on. Command + would switch among windows of the same app only if they are on the same stage. So if you have windows spread over different monitors, the key combo would not work. Turning off Stage Manager would make all monitors a single stage again and Command + will work like it did before Ventura.
After struggling for a long time, I finally figured out the optimal way to browse through application windows in macOS. The [command + ` (backtick)] shortcut does not work in macOS anymore, unless the chrome windows are minimised. So, the workaround is to set the shortcut of Mission Control-> "Move right a space" as [command + `] and -> "Move left a space" as [command + 1].
This helps toggle all open windows by using just one hand.
The other suggestions about using the default shortcut for moving spaces [control + >(arrow key)] felt super inconvenient. You have to continually move your right hand from the mouse to use that shortcut, which defeats the shortcuts' purpose.
So, to sum up the solution:
Go to System Preferences -> Keyboard Shortcuts -> Mission Control ->
Mission Control "Move left a space" double-click then [command + 1]
-> "Move right a space" double-click then set [command + `(backtick)]

Every since I switched to Sonoma I've been having this very annoying issue where sometimes the keyboard shortcut command+backtick works to "move focus to next window" and sometimes it doesn't. I typically use this all day every day in Safari, Apple Mail & iterm2(toggling between 2 windows in same app). I can't figure out why this is only working sometimes and not others, but it's driving me nuts. Anyone else running into this or have any suggestions to fix it?
I've being using Firefox for a long time and decided to give Safari another go, but I can't switch windows with cmd + backtick. However, cmd + shift + backtick works! I've tried it with two different MacBooks, same effect. The shortcut works fine for other apps.
Is anyone experiencing the same?
Hi Dygmates,
I don't know what happened but since last week I can no longer "Move focus to next window" or type a Backtick on Mac OS Monterey 12.6.1 using my Dygma Raise on Bazecore 1.0.0-rc.
I checked my key codes using this website. And when I press ` I get §
{ "key": "§", "keyCode": 192, "which": 192, "code": "Backquote", "location": 0, "altKey": false, "ctrlKey": false, "metaKey": false, "shiftKey": false, "repeat": false } Instead of `
{ "key": "\`", "keyCode": 192, "which": 192, "code": "IntlBackslash", "location": 0, "altKey": false, "ctrlKey": false, "metaKey": false, "shiftKey": false, "repeat": false }The export from Bazecore has this entry
{
"keyCode": 53,
"label": "`"
},Any ideas what happened or how I can get it working again?
This feature is still present (I'm using 10.7.3 and it works for me).
Go to System Preferences > Keyboard and check the keyboard shortcuts. In the list of 'Keyboard & Text Input' shortcuts you should see 'Move focus to next window' ⌘+`.
Make sure it is checked, and it should work.
You might also be interested in Hyperswitch.
Along with Command ⌘ + Tab ⇥, hyperswitch allows Option ⌥ + Tab ⇥ to switch between windows of the same app. I find it much more useful than Command ⌘ + ~ (tilde) since Command ⌘ + ~ (tilde) only iterates through all windows, rather than just toggling between two.
In MacOS 10.13 (High Sierra) I cannot get the Cmd-` to work at all unless the application itself has a menu command to cycle through windows. If it does, it probably uses that key code; if it doesn't have a key code but has a menu item, it's easy to add the key code in System->Keyboard->Shortcuts. If it does not have a menu for that, e.g. Safari, then I've found no way to cycle through windows. it does have a Next Tab command.
Use Witch https://manytricks.com/witch/ as suggested by timothymh. Toggle between all application windows and forget about Command-backtick altogether.
Coming from Windows and Linux, the Cmd+Tab and Cmd+Backtick of Macos feels half baked and annoying to me.
Luckily there's an amazing Open source alternative Alt-Tab!!
Here's the link: https://alt-tab-macos.netlify.app/
I've installed this and it's really awesome. It has options for both all apps alt-tabbing as well as apps of one single app with Alt+Backtick.
Also Alt+backtick works even if all windows of one app are not in same desktop.
I suggest if you want to cycle between all application windows including the minimized windows is to enable it through System pref - Mission Control - Application windows - select your preferred keyboard short cut (I am using Control + down arrow).
Also, to do the same with mouse is to assign certain corner through System pref -- Mission Control -- Hot corners - select your desired corner and assign it to application windows.
